Sacré bleu! Restaurants in France now have to give out doggy bags

French restaurateurs have expressed consternation after a new law has made le doggy bag – long considered a dining faux pas in France – a legal requirement.

The new law came into force on New Year’s Day, and dining establishments serving more than 150 covers a day are now required to provide doggy bags or a take-away box if a customer asks for one.

It’s part of an initiative launched by the French government in 2013, with the aim of reducing food waste by 50% by 2025Seven million tonnes of food are thrown away each year in France, and the restaurant industry alone is responsible for one million tonnes of food waste. Read more…
