The opening shot of the next epic book-to-television fantasy tale could have been taken by a drone on a trip through a sweeping bright green landscape not unlike those we’ve seen before in Lord of the Rings. We weave through mountains, scoping out a world that’s a little worse for the wear but, despite its overgrown state, is beautiful nonetheless.
It’s a pretty shot that accomplishes exactly what it set out to do: To say “once upon a time” — this is no small story about to be told — without doing so outright.
Of course, there never was a way to adapt Terry Brooks’ Shannara novels without going big. There are elves fighting for their existence, dangerous quests, loyalties tested and all the best of the fantasy TV bingo. Read more…
