Essence magazine gave us a big dose of #BlackGirlMagic on Wednesday with its reveal of the February 2016 issue.
Featuring social activist Johnetta Elzie on one of three covers, which also include actresses Teyonah Parris and Yara Shahidi, the Black History Month issue celebrates the black women “shaping our future.”
As a women’s lifestyle magazine, Essence‘s decision to include Elzie in the cover series speaks volumes about the increasing presence of activism in our everyday lives.
Elzie became a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014. She cofounded We The Protesters, an activist group dedicated to racial justice and protesting against police brutality, and she was recently recognized in The Root 100 2015 list for her organizing work and efforts behind Campaign Zero, a comprehensive list of policy demands for criminal justice reform.
