To many, the placenta is merely an afterthought. Within the Māori culture of New Zealand, however, the placenta is revered and often buried in a place of familial significance. Now one woman’s Facebook post has spotlighted the ancient tradition and encouraged mothers to share their own stories.
Photographer Emma Jean focuses on capturing births and newborns, stemming from her other profession as a midwife. She posted an image of baby Harper on Facebook, still connected to the placenta, and took the opportunity to ask women how they honour the process of birth. Read more…
