Iowa Democrats, Republicans unveil Microsoft app to streamline caucuses

The Iowa Republican and Democratic Parties unveiled a new Microsoft app for reporting their caucus results Thursday, in the hopes that the modernization can help improve the byzantine, complex and politically crucial system of Iowa’s presidential caucuses.

The app will allow individual captains across the state’s 1,681 precincts to report their local site’s vote tallies as soon as they’re counted up in the room, putting a digital flourish on a vote-counting process that’s remained unchanged for decades. It also could help avoid chaos like in 2012, when missing votes from some precincts led the state GOP chairman to declare Mitt Romney the caucus winner on election night in a nail-biter, only to have Rick Santorum certified the official winner weeks later.
