LAS VEGAS — Probably the biggest surprise of CES 2016 was the return of vinyl.

Both Sony and Panasonic announced new turntables, and not just for nostalgia’s sake. After a limited release this summer, Panasonic’s Technics SL-1200 will enter the company’s official product lineup, and Sony’s PS-HX500 will convert vinyl to high-res digital audio files.

The return of vinyl is, in my mind, the best example of why CES 2016 was one of the best shows in years: a renewed willingness to meet consumers where they are. Vinyl never went away, of course, but its popularity has climbed considerably in the past few years, and not just from wistful old folks who attend Phish concerts. Read more…
