Iconic Ringling Bros. circus elephants will retire to Florida way ahead of schedule

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced Monday that its famous and controversial touring elephant show will be coming to an end in May, a year and a half earlier than expected.

The remaining elephants in the circus will now enjoy retirement in typical American style at a center in Florida

The elephant show has been a popular staple of the circus for more than a century, but has increasingly come under scrutiny amid increasing concerns over animal cruelty in circus shows.

The circus’ parent company, Feld Entertainment, told The Associated Press that all of the iconic elephants will be permanently retired to the company’s 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida by May. There are 11 elephants on tour with the circus. Read more…
