Amnesty International slams Iran for executing 73 juvenile offenders

Iran continues to send juvenile offenders to the gallows despite a decades-old pledge to not use the death penalty against people who commit a crime while under the age of 18, Amnesty International said.

The London-based human rights organization slammed Iran’s “hypocrisy” in a new report detailing the country’s executions of at least 73 juveniles from 2005 to 2015 with another 160 juvenile offenders currently sitting on death row.

The actual figures are likely higher because information about the death penalty in Iran is often shrouded in secrecy, Amnesty said
