The 3 Aussie women turning makeup into an online diversity movement

It can be easy to dismiss makeup and beauty as a frivolous pursuit, but that would be missing the point.

Clara Siry, Anabelle Acquah and Chanel B., all 19-year-old university students, started their YouTube channel, The Pastels, in late 2014. The friends from high school in western Sydney thought it would be fun to share makeup tips online, but swiftly realised it was set to become a whole lot more.

After starting the channel, they immediately began to receive messages from people of all ethnicities, who were inspired to wear makeup because they finally saw someone online who looked like them. Clara has Timorese heritage, while Anabelle has Ghanian and Chanel, Philippino. Read more…
