LOS ANGELES — Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift were not only the biggest winners of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, but also its saviors. In a night of predictable performances and even more predictable winners, they made bold statements: Lamar with music and spectacle, Swift with words pointed directly at Kanye West.
The Grammys are usually a good mix of musical uppers and downers — there’s the performance equivalents of NyQuil, the shots of absinthe, and the craft beer in between.
But on Monday night, two of the most anticipated performers — Rihanna and surprise performer Lauryn Hill — backed out at the last minute, leaving a show that, for most of its three-hour-plus runtime, felt like we were still waiting for something to happen.
