Russian cellist named in Panama Papers is at the heart of a $2 billion scandal

Sergei Roldugin may be the world’s richest cellist, or simply a front for his “brother” Vladimir Putin. 

Roldugin, a People’s Artist of Russia and the artistic director of the House of Music in St. Petersburg, is well known in the Russian music community.

But he is perhaps better known as being a very close friend of the Russian president. The two are so close, in fact, that they refer to one another as “brothers.” It was Roldugin who actually introduced Putin to his ex-wife decades ago. And it is that closeness that led Putin to ask Roldugin to be godfather of his daughter, Maria, as well as others to question him about whether their relationship had helped him amass a fortune worth some $350 million.
