The Australian government’s controversial site blocking bill is about to get another workout.
On Monday, some of the country’s largest record companies, including Universal Music Australia, Warner Music Australia and SonyMusic Entertainment Australia, announced they would be seeking to have the site KickassTorrents and proxy sites blocked in Australia.
The labels are able to take the legal action thanks to an amendment to the Copyright Act passed in 2015. Rights holders can now apply to the Federal Court to force Internet service providers to block foreign websites that have the “primary purpose” of facilitating copyright infringement. Read more…
