LONDON — Works of art by acclaimed British artist Damien Hirst, involving dead animals preserved in tanks, leaked potentially-dangerous formaldehyde gas during an exhibition in London.
Levels of the carcinogenic gas were detected during the 2012 show at the Tate Modern gallery by researchers testing a new sensor, according to a study in the Analytical Methods journal.

“It has been found that the tanks are surrounded by formaldehyde fumes, constantly exuded in the atmosphere (likely via the sealant), reaching levels of 5 ppm (parts per million), one order of magnitude higher than the 0.5ppm limit set up by legislation,” the abstract states. Read more…
