These family photos, spanning several decades and countries, come from the vast collection of Steve Given, a retired Navy photographer and teacher from Victoria, Australia.
An avid collector of vintage photographic equipment and ephemera, Given amassed thousands of loose negatives, mostly snapshots of nameless friends and families taken by unknown photographers with cheap box or folding cameras
In sorting through his trove of imagery, Given began to recognize recurring motifs, such as families posing in front of their cars. He also discovered that simple family photos could serve as vernacular time capsules, capturing changing fashions through the years. Read more…
