A gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the early hours of Sunday morning, killing approximately 50 people and wounding at least 53 others.
The shooter, identified by various media outlets as Omar Mateen, was shot and killed by police, according to Police chief John Mina.
“It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said at a press conference.
The shooting reportedly opened fire around 2 a.m. EST, briefly exchanging fire with a police officer before entering the club. At 5 a.m. local time, police decided to attempt to rescue the hostages.
