The Supreme Court ruled against a set of Texas abortion restrictions in a decision issued Monday.
The 5-3 ruling declared the regulations unconstitutional because they place an undue burden on patients and do not promote women’s health and safety as proponents of the laws had argued.
The case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, is the most significant Supreme Court decision on abortion rights in nearly a quarter century.
Justice Stephen G. Breyer wrote the majority opinion and was joined by Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Anthony Kennedy. Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote a concurring opinion. Chief Justice John Roberts dissented along with Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. Read more…
