Telephone pole struck by lightning explodes into smithereens

As Chicago was pummeled by heavy rain and thunderstorms Sunday, lightning struck ferociously across the city. 

While the storms lashed the city and flash flood warnings were put in place, a driver caught the moment a bolt struck a telephone pole, blowing it into a million tiny pieces.

The clip was taken by local resident Anja Englert on her drive home. It looks even more devastating in slo-mo.

The Illinois Medical District transit station also took a direct hit, causing parts of its canopy to collapse and train services across several lines to come to a halt.

That moment, which was preceded by a succession of sparks and flashes, was caught on camera by passing motorists. Read more…
