Major earthquake and multiple aftershocks rock central Italy

An earthquake with a magnitude estimated at 6.1 rattled Rome and central Italy early Wednesday, leaving at least two people dead according to Italy’s Ansa Chronicle.

Social media users are reporting the collapse of numerous buildings in the town of Amatrice and state-run RAI radio said people ran into the streets in the Umbria and Le Marche regions shortly after the quake struck just after 3:30 a.m. local time.  

According to the Associated Press, the mayor of Amatrice says his town “isn’t here anymore,” and that people are trapped under buildings, while the mayor of Accumoli says a family of four are trapped under debris without any signs of life. Read more…
