The recapture of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is a story that seems to only get increasingly more bizarre.

Information included in Sean Penn’s profile of the kingpin reveals that Kate del Castillo, a popular Mexican actress, played a central role in Guzman’s interview and subsequent recapture.

Castillo’s connection to El Chapo seems to begin in 2012, when the actress wrote an open letter to the drug lord, in which she called on him to “traffic with love.”

Mr. Chapo, wouldn’t it be cool that you started trafficking with love? With cures for diseases, with food for the homeless children, with alcohol for the retirement homes that don’t let the elderly spend the rest of the days doing whatever the fuck they want. Imagine trafficking with corrupt politicians instead of women and children who end up as slaves. Why don’t you burn all those whorehouses where women are worth less than a pack of cigarettes.
