Chinese farmer buries money for safekeeping but termites ate the stash

A 60-year-old farmer in Sichuan, China, found himself 20,000 yuan ($3,000) poorer when the banknotes he buried in his bedroom had been destroyed by white ants.

Qi Shengli, who lives in Goujiao town in Yuechi county, told Chinese media outlets that he didn’t remember exactly how long the money was stored in the 15 cm (6-inch) deep hole he dug in the corner of his bedroom. “It might be one or two years,” he said.

According to Qi, he had separated the banknotes into two bags and covered the hole with a brick after burying them. Over the recent Chinese New Year, Qi removed the brick to find that white ants had eaten away at most of the cash. Read more…
