Current United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s term as leader of the massive intergovernmental organization ends at the close of this year. Starting on Jan. 1, 2017, a new diplomat will be at the helm of the U.N.’s global operations — and many argue that leader should be a woman.
Throughout the 70-year history of the United Nations, only men — eight total — have led the organization. Of the nine official nominees currently on the radar for this election cycle, four are women, although the number of candidates is expected to widen before the ninth U.N. secretary-general is announced late this year.
