One of the surprising joys of Better Call Saul has (ironically) been the drama’s distance from Breaking Bad’s iconic story lines and its patient exploration of Jimmy McGill’s pre-Saul Goodman life. For many Breaking Bad mega fans, this slow-burn series may not satisfy their need for bullets, plot twists, and nail-biter moments.
But what the show creators — Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould — have accomplished is something greater: the establishment of a world with characters that can truly stand alone, outside the vast shadows of Walter White and his tipped porkpie hat.
