Indonesia has raised the punishment for convicted pedophiles to chemical castration, in response to national outrage following the brutal gang rape and murder of a young girl.

President Joko Widodo signed off on the new law on Wednesday, saying: “We hope that this law will be a deterrent for offenders and can suppress sexual crimes against children.”

The maximum jail time for child sex offenders has also been increased from 10 to 20 years.

Activists had been pressing Widodo to fast track the bill, after a violent gang rape and murder shocked the nation. In April, a 14-year-old girl was dragged into the forest in Sumatra and gang raped then killed by 14 boys, many younger than 18. Read more…
