Crop-murdering green snails are now crossing the sea (slowly) via strawberry imports

Tasmania has flipped out and shut down agricultural imports after discovering crop-destroying green snails taking up residence in two punnets of the imported fruit.

The green snail, native to Europe and the North Africa has a nasty habit of obliterating a variety of leafy vegetables as well as native vegetation, wheat crops and lucerne. As such there are strict quarantine laws in place to ensure the spread of the pest to the rest of the country.

Two West Australian growers have also recently halted imports of strawberries due to the discovery of the pesky snails. Read more…
