Advances in information and communication technologies are associated with a wide and increasing range of social consequences, which are experienced by individuals, work groups, organizations, inter-organizational networks, and societies at large. Information technologies are implicated in all industries and in public as well as private enterprises. Understanding the relationships between information technologies and social organization is an increasingly important and urgent social and scholarly concern in many disciplinary fields.

Information and Organization seeks to publish original scholarly articles on the relationships between information technologies and social organization. It seeks a scholarly understanding that is based on empirical research and relevant theory. Information and Organization also seeks to advance established and emerging theoretical arguments through the publication of papers that review empirical research and provide directions for future research and theory development. Essays that provoke critical thinking on important subjects are also sought. The aim is to provide a forum that brings together innovative, reflective, and rigorous scholarship.

Of special interest are contributions on the social construction of information technologies, the implications of information technologies for organizational change, alternative organizational designs such as virtual and networked organizations, information system development, organizational governance and control, accounting systems, globalization, decision processes, organizational learning, ethics of information, organizational communication and organizational culture. A rich variety of disciplines provide valuable perspectives on these topics, and the journal seeks contributions from fields such as information systems, organization science, philosophy, history, psychology, anthropology, political science, sociology, computer science, communication, and others.

Interest is not restricted to any particular technology for processing or transmitting information. Indeed, new technologies emerge continuously, and the journal seeks to provide a useful forum for discussion about emerging technologies and their social and organizational consequences. Interest is also not restricted to any specific theoretical or disciplinary position. The journal invites a broad spectrum of contemporary and historical scholarship, including theoretical, empirical, analytical and interpretive studies, as well as critical theory and action research.

Health Economics

Health economics took off in 1970 or thereabouts, just after the take-off date for the economics of education. Although early health economics made use of human capital theory as did the economics of education, it soon took a different route inspired by Arrow’s work on medical insurance. The economics of education failed to live up to its promising start in the 1960s and gradually ran out of steam. The economics of health, however, has made steady theoretical and empirical progress since 1970, principally in coming to grips with the implications of supplier-induced demand and the difficulties of evaluating health care outcomes. Some of the best work on British health economics has been in the area of normative welfare economics, defining more precisely what is meant by equity in the delivery of health care and measuring the degree of success in achieving equity. Recent efforts to reform the NHS by the introduction of ‘quasi markets’ have improved the quantity and quality of health care in Britain. In short, British health economics has been characterised by the use of Pigovian piecemeal rather than Paretian global welfare economics, retaining a distinctive style that sets it apart from American health economics.

Global Environmental Change

Global Environmental Change is a peer-reviewed international journal publishing high quality, theoretically and empirically rigorous articles, which advance knowledge about the human and policy dimensions of global environmental change. The journal interprets global environmental change to mean the outcome of processes that are manifest in localities, but with consequences at multiple spatial, temporal and socio-political scales. The journal is interested in articles which have a significant social science component. These include articles that address the social drivers or consequences of environmental change, or social and policy processes that seek to address problems of environmental change. Topics include, but are not restricted to, the drivers, consequences and management of changes in: biodiversity and ecosystem services, climate, coasts, food systems, land use and land cover, oceans, urban areas, and water resources.

Gender & Society (GENDSOC) is a peer-reviewed journal, focused on the study of gender. It is the official journal of Sociologists for Women in Society, and was founded in 1987 as an outlet for feminist social science.
