  • SEMM2413 – Thermodynamics
Thermodynamics is a basic science that deals with energy. This course introduces students to the basic principles of thermodynamics. It will discuss basic concepts and introduces the various forms of energy and energy transfer as well as properties of pure substances. A general relation for the conservation of energy principle will be developed and applied to closed systems and extended to open systems. The second law of thermodynamics will be introduced and applied to cycles, cyclic devices and processes.
  • SEMM2433 – Applied Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
This course aims to develop a fundamental understanding of the processes by which heat and energy are inter‐related and converted and by which heat is transferred. The course will review major principles of energy conversion and the modes of heat transfer. The basic laws of thermodynamics and the governing equations for heat transfer and thermodynamics will be introduced and subsequently used to solve practical engineering problems involving thermodynamics and heat transfer. The course will also cover fundamental principles of power generation systems.
  • SEMM2423 – Applied Thermodynamics
The aim of this course is to teach second-year mechanical engineering students on the application of thermodynamics principles to evaluate the performance criteria of various thermal systems. These include the reciprocating air-compressor, internal combustion engines, vapor power plants, gas turbine plants and refrigeration systems. Also, principles of conservation of mass and energy are applied to various air-conditioning processes to assess the energy transfer during the processes.
  • SEMM4423 – Power Plant Engineering
This course provides a systematic approach in the basic principles, component identification, description, and optimization (where applicable) of general design of power plant in the present and future application. The students will be introduced to the current trend in energy supply, basic economical consideration in development and operation of conventional power plant, critical equipment for steam generators, various type of conventional fuel for power generation and related technologies. The course will also focus on the detailed theory, design, and application of gas turbine and combined cycle power plant. In addition, students also will be exposed on some of the latest technology related to renewable energy and energy storage, with basic of environmental consideration related to the power plant design.
  • SEMU2113 – Engineering Sciences
This course is comprised of two parts: Thermodynamics and Solid Mechanics.
