COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

One of the areas for competitive advantage is operations, i.e. the production and delivery of both goods and services to the customer. Operations strategy ties up with the overall business strategy while operations management ensures that the operations are executed effectively, efficiently and productively.

 

This course introduces students to the importance of operations strategy, current issues, tools and techniques and analysis related to the design, planning, development, control, and improvement of manufacturing and service operations. Substantial measurement, analysis and improvement of internal processes will be covered. Various operations techniques for problem solving as well as developing new operations systems will be discussed using case studies.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

   
1. Integrate knowledge with other areas in Engineering Business Management.
2. Organize operations strategies and management procedures, including implementation; propose improvements
3. Identify and apply new knowledge and information beyond programme coverage.

Course Guidelines

 

Tests (20%)

 

Two separate tests will be taken by students.

 

Case Study /Exercises (30%)

 

Students will discuss general questions from the selected cases and prepare a short report the findings. Evaluation of your report is based on the content, the analysis, and the recommendations given. Assignments of case studies are by respective lecturer.

 

Post Module Assignment (PMA) (50%)

 

The assessment is based on the written PMA from the questions given from each part.  The analysis and recommendations must be suitable and practical.

 

 

 

General

 

The due date for all assignment /case studies and PMA is 4 weeks after the date of final lecture. Penalty will be imposed for late submission and after 7 days the PMA report will not be accepted for grading.

 

Plagiarism will result in failure of the module.
