To summarize this quote by Peter Drucker, leadership is to encourage one’s vision, performance, capability beyond their normal limits. This quote by Peter Drucker of which I had seen was applied by one of my research’s supervisor during my study previously. She is the one whom lift her students patiently to achieve a certain standard beyond the norm of her students. As a few years I was supervised by her with overwhelming support she had shown and guidance she had provided along the study completion. Not only me, but all of her students received the “lifting” support which beyond norm to encourage and building a personality within a better human’s personality.

She had shown me that leadership could change a person’s life to be better. She had never been a favouritism when chosen the research students to be supervised. Instead of chosen the performed student to be supervised, she had always welcome anyone with lower or higher education background to be supervised. For example, she had supervised a low student achiever and the students had excel in her research studies with a proper guidance and performance. She will guide every student according to their needs and not to let the students’ drifting alone or be at the same performance level. Lower students’ achiever would receive more attention and extraordinary guidance compared to higher students’ achiever. However, for higher students’ achiever, she will set a higher benchmark and with a proper nurturing process to be excellence. She will never let her students feel “alone” and will always monitor their performance.

Not only that, I once was supervised by a male supervisor whom also had these characteristics of leadership. He is a multi-tasking male lecturer equipped with this leadership capability. He always provides opportunity for everyone to work or study with him. He never set a limit for the students’ capability according to the grades. Yet, he looks forward to encourage each individual to learn and to be better in learning either theoretical or technical skills.  Instead, he would always have time to guide his students whenever needed and he also plays a good leader role. I could see most of his students could excel in the study and career as what had been developed during supervised process.

Most important element is that the leader and the persons’ whom work together able to play their role honestly and sincerely with a willing to be a better person by the ‘lifting support’ by the leader and organization. Everyone must be professional in the organization or team or group, with a higher vision to drive the respective targets of short-term or even long-term. Even though a good leader could not drive the organization or team or group without a good communication within the organization and everyone must play their roles properly to drive excellence within individual and to drive the organization or team or group towards sustainability. With a proper planning and process to achieve the targets, every individual life could be changed to a better life, better vision, performance and capability.
