Research Tips (Literature Review)

There are several mistakes to be alerted and avoided when writing Literature Review:

  1. Ensure that the citations used in your content are tally with the references.
  2. Ensure the correct citations and references format.
  3. Avoid to cite more than 3 references for a sentence/statement. It showing that you are not read/extract the importance of the referenced papers precisely.
  4. Hanging sentences also should be avoided, use complete sentences with appropriate continuities.
  5. For literature review, avoid express your opinions without any reference for a long argument.
  6. In literature review writing, ensure that you extract the most important argument of a particular paper, not explain lengthy of that paper specific works. Ensure the the synthesis of your literature.
  7. It is also prohibited to show that there are many references used in your literature review without the strong relevant arguments. Literature review not the part to show how many papers you read but to show how deeper you understood your field of study.

Research Tips (Literature Review)

  1. Articles Searching – As stated previously in the other Research Tips posts, you can navigate to Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science and search the articles that related to your research by using specific keywords. You can also set alert as stated previously in Some Useful Research Resources using keywords that will automatically email you the relevant publications.
  2. Choosing an Article – Ensure you are reading a good paper by checking the impact factor of that paper, the citations of the paper and the authors’ background.
  3. How to Extract Info from Articles – Extract the important information from the paper, the authors information, the title of the paper, the Theory /theoretical background of that paper, variables, method, findings and implications, critical review/limitations.
  4. Importance of Reading a Paper Immediately – Avoid to save a paper and read it later since it is not a good reading habit and you will end without reading it due to procrastination.
  5. Final Matrix Outcome – Insert all information extracted from a paper and immediately put in a matrix. Example of literature matrix as stated below. Your literature matrix should become richer with more papers’ extractions.

Research Tips (Writing a High Impact Paper)

Here some tips to write a good paper.

  1. Title – Ensure your paper title is precise, highlight the objectives of your paper and include the keywords that you expected for citations
  2. Abstract – Should be short, sufficiently informative. Abstract should reveal the research problem and state clearly how you tackle it, with what method and should be wrapped with your contributions
  3. Introduction – Be straight forward, highlight the objectives and proper keywords for citations
  4. Conclusion – Should be something different to Abstract, highlight the greatness of your works. In conclusion, objectives achievement and your works’ shortcomings should be addressed well in Conclusion. Also, don’t disclose future works.

Happy reading and writing.

OOP

OOP stand for object-oriented programming that different with procedural or functional programming. OPP based on objects and are basically consisting of 4 main principles which are:

Encapsulation – When an object only expose the selected information.

Abstraction – Hides complex details to reduce complexity.

Inheritance – Entities can inherit attributes from other entities.

Polymorphism – Entities can have more than one form.

UML

The UML Class diagram is a graphical notation used to construct and visualize object oriented systems. UML stand for Unified Modelling Language and closely related to object-oriented programming. UML diagram used widely to present a system or project/ application that based on object-oriented programming. In software engineering, a class diagram in the Unified Modeling Language is a type of static structure diagram that describes the structure of a system by showing the system’s classes, their attributes, operations, and the relationships among objects (Wikipedia). A class that showing 3 compartments (Figure 1) and the notations (Figure 2).

IEEE and ACM

IEEE stands for The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the massive technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. IEEE publishing makes the exchange of technical knowledge possible with the highest quality and the greatest impact. IEEE have the database for all the publications of journals and conferences conducted under IEEE. However, Papers published under IEEE journals are majority with high qualities and impacts compare with IEEE proceedings. That is because IEEE proceedings usually are collections of papers from conferences conducted by difference colleges/universities/academic institutions around the world and published through IEEE which means that IEEE only handle the post-publication process but not involve in the paper reviewing or appraisal team and not involve as conference committee.

ACM stands for Association for Computing Machinery is another educational and scientific computing society, delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. ACM Digital Library includes all of the ACM journal papers and proceedings while ACM has been clarified as the most prestigious computing society.

Both IEEE and ACM are well-known and been clarified that majority of the IEEE and ACM journals are highly impact and produce many high quality academic papers in engineering and computing field.

Research Tips (Summarize Your Research)

Here I attached my own diagram that used to summarized my research. Can you identify the problem, objectives, solutions and contribution of my research? It is an effective way to express your research in an easy-to-understand manner through visualization. Feel free to share.
