Personal leadership development plan based on the Four Pillars of Self-leadership.

Pillar 1: Knowing who you ARE

As an educator, I always believe we must have the passion in teaching and learning (T&L). Teaching is a process of transferring knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to another. I have extensive industrial experience in geomatics engineering, which including land surveying and hydrographic surveying. Prior join the Academia, I accumulated 4 years’ experience in marine and construction industry from 2007 to 2011. In 2011-2023, I was engaged with the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (JUPEM). So, I have experienced working on various notable projects and mastered skills and knowledges along my professional journeys. Indeed, my industrial experience has equipped me with practical insights and real-world problem-solving abilities that is not written in the textbook. I strongly believe I am passionate to spread them with my students and crafting them to be future-ready surveyors.

Pillar 2: Knowing what you DO

One of my teaching practices, I prioritize critical-thinking and problem-solving to prepare for the success beyond classroom. To me, I truly believe the power of education in knowledge transfer. Teaching not only allows me to stay engaged with the subjects, indeed it also helps us in keeping updated to the emerging science and technology. For example, I will try to approach the students using student-centered learning and creating an interactive learning engagement. By combining a student-centered approach with interactive learning engagements, I aim to create a learning environment where students are actively involved and deeply engaged, facilitating a more effective and enjoyable learning experience. I will ensure my teaching not always comes from the classical textbook, but also related the students with practical insights and real-world problem-solving abilities.

Pillar 3: Knowing what you NEED TO LEARN

Honesty, I admit I am new in the academia world, I need more improvement on my effective teaching delivery. As I am using the student-centered approach, so I need to understanding the students behaviour and crafting my classroom lessons based students’ performance and engagement levels. For example, when dealing with the tech-savvy Gen-Z students, how to communicate and facilitate them as well as using the technical and digital approach to keep them stay connected in the T&L process. So, I will PDCA strategy in teaching, systematically identify the learning needs and creating a structured learning plan, do weekly reflection and adjust T&L strategies accordingly.

Pillar 4: Using what you KNOW

Based on the student-centered approach with interactive learning engagements, I certainly believe that will create a conducive leaning environment. This allows me to have good classroom management and positive learning atmosphere. Also, by incorporating real-world examples, I can provide students with guidance on developing their professional career paths and bridging the industry expectations based industrial practice. By integrating my professional experiences and expertise into my T&L process, I can provide valuable, real-world insights that enrich the learning experience for future-ready surveyors.
