IIUM PhD External Examiner

Alhamdulillah for the opportunity given by IIUM to examine their student’s PhD thesis entitled :

THE ROLE OF E-SERVICE QUALITY IN PROPELLING BRAND ATTACHMENT AND WILLINGNESS TO PAY MORE.

Date / Day: 11 March 2021/ Thursday
Time: 9.00 a.m.(Malaysia Time)
Venue: Video Conferencing (via GOOGLE MEET)

Student is Gul-E-Rana from Pakistan and an academician in Saudi. At the time of viva-voce session, it was 4 am in the morning. This is one of the challenges faced by students facing their viva-voce during the pandemic. However, I think overall, based on experiences examining PhD thesis online, students felt more relaxed compared to a face to face session.

Gamification in Paper Review

This is the first time I got points for reviewing a journal article. Yes this is gamification in paper review. This journal is one of my favourite journals in the area of e-Health and it is categorised as Q1 journal indexed in Web of Science. I was surprised and at the same time very excited when I received the invitation to review an article. I wonder what and how is it I was invited heheh. After reading the paper, then I realised that the authors has cited our paper which was also published in a Q1 journal. : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijmedinf.2017.05.008

And Wow, yes this paper has been cited 35 times (as reported by Google Scholar)!

Google scholar search as at 12.38 pm, 24 February 2021.

So there are 2 main benefits for publishing in journals indexed in Web of Science:

  1. The chance and probability that your published paper is being cited is higher
  2. You got to chance to be invited as a reviewer. This enables us to build up our research profile and build linkages with journal editors.

In this example, I gained points for accepting to review the paper assigned and gained points for the reason that one of my articles was cited in the paper being assigned. This is cool.

I see this as the strategy of the journal to motivate reviewers to submit the completed review ahead of time (also gained more points). In addition, points accumulated can be used to pay the article processing fee, since this Q1 journal indexed in Web of Science is charging authors for publications.

Alhamdulillah, for this experience. Apart from assisting UTM to achieve good standing and marks for the MyRA Audit, actually we should realise that publishing in Q1 and Q2 journal articles provide vast benefits to researchers. Let us aim for this. Unless… you publish and do not bother if other researchers read them or not, then why publish? ha ha ha

Yes, it is not easy to publish in the reputable journals, but we have to start some where.

Read and learn from the articles published in those journal

Write write write to leave a legacy

Write write write to contribute to knowledge

Write write write to share your thoughts

Write write write to benefit others

READ & WRITE!

Bibliometric Analysis Workshop

We had a 3-day break for Chinese New Year holidays in Johor. I have decided to join this online workshop.

It was a very beneficial and interesting workshop in which I gained new knowledge specifically on:

  1. The basics of Bibliometric Analysis
  2. Using the Harzings’s Publish or Perish software for getting detailed data for the bibliomteric analysis
  3. VOSviewer to assist in data visualization.

Insya-Allah, may this is a new beginning for writing more papers in Q1 and Q2 journals. Looking forward to write a single-author paper.

GERAK!

Alhamdulillah so happy to moderate this session.

A good sharing session by 2 AHIBS lecturers on their efforts to being more healthy and losing weight.

Both have their own style and strategy.

1. Dr Mahadi focused on nutrition and having balanced meal and snacking everyday. The program is 5 meals a day. Dr Mahadi has lose 7 kg in 2 months.

2. Dr Umar focused more on physical activity of 8000 steps per day. And at the sams time just enjoy eating meals prepared by his mum’s. Good strategy indeed 😀. Dr Umar has lose 13kg in 100 days.

One very important note is to ensure achieve the result in the long run is, DO IT WITH OTHERS, WITH OUR FRIENDS.

Find a support group. And most important, find a technique or strategy that WE ENJOY!

Experiencing Whova Event Management App

My team (UTM Research Computing) has been appointed to be in charge of technical aspects of an online conference organised by UTM Sustainable Campus Unit.

The organiser has decided to use Whova Event Management Software to ensure that the event runs smoothly. We had subscribed the Basic Plan and used for disseminating information on the conference agenda and speakers.

The online conference platform used for the paper presentations is CISCO Webex which has been subscribed by UTM.

Why use Whova?

The organizer wanted to make sure strictly that only registered participants are eligible to access the conference. Thus all Webex links are embedded in Whova.

As the Head of Technical Committee, I had the chance to communicate with Whova representative Annalee Sasahara few days after the conference ended. The session was mainly to inform us the level of participation in Whova. Due to time differences between Malaysia and the US, I had an online meeting with her at 11.30 pm 😀

Overall, the participants and organizer were satisfied with the usage of Whova app. As the technical team, we found it useful and enable a systematic event management . If cost is not an issue, then YES, GO FOR IT!

Discussion on Active Learning Initiatives

Discussion through Webex at 12 pm

The new semester has started and today is Week 4 of the semester.

For now all Teaching and Learning activities are conducted online up to 31 December 2020.

To ensure meaningful and effective learning, lecturers should explore opportunities and initiatives to implement classess in an active way.

In the normal face to face lecture, having 1 – 2 hours lectures are fine, as we can control the environment, but this is different in the online learning environment.

With different levels of access to network faced by students, we have to explore tools that enable us to interact with them both asynchronously and synchronously.

For the Information Systems(IS) @ AHIBS, we have started to use for example Padlet, Mentimeter and Trello.

In today’s meeting, we have discussed about our practices in teaching and setting the time for sharing regarding the use of those tools among the IS members.

Teaching and Learning Workshop: Learning Padlet and Mentimeter

Attended this workshop today to learn the usage of Padlet and Mentimeter. The sharing was by Dr Nazmona who is the Information Systems group leader for FREE and Ts. Dr Suraya who is the Information Systems Director at Azman Hashim International Business School.

Padlet serves as a platform enables interactivity among students and instructors. Students may post notes, videos, images on the padlet created by the instructor. The figure below shows and example of a Padlet which I obtained from other website.

Instructors will be able to provide grades, star or points for the padlet posted by students.

A bonus for UTM lecturers, this can be embedded in UTM E-Learning and can be counted as one of the blended learning components and to be included in TES.

Mentimeter which was shared by Dr Suraya enables intructors to create for example online quizzes and word cloud. This is an alternative to the well known tool Kahoot! This is an example of a simple quiz created during the session:

Thanks to Dr Grace, AHIBS FREE Coordinator for organizing such fun learning session. And of course, many thanks to Dr Suraya and Dr Nazmona for the gifts! We had fun!
