Dayang Norhayati Abang Jawawi is a Professor in Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). She received her B.Sc. in Software Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University, UK, and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in the field of Software Engineering from UTM. She has been an academic staff at Software Engineering Department since 1997. She has served as the Head of Software Engineering Department from November 2009 until February 2015, Head of Software Engineering Research Group from July 2015 until January 2017, Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Development), Faculty of Computing from February 2017 until June 2018, Associate Chair (Academic and Student Development), Faculty of Engineering from July 2018 until October 2022 and Deputy Dean (Academic and Student Affairs), Faculty of Computing from November 2022 until October 2025. Currently, she is a Chair of UTM Research Ethics Committee (UTM REC), Department of Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), UTM since July 2022 and an Adjunct Professor at University of Technology Sarawak since April 2025. She is a member of the Software Engineering Research Group (SERG), Smart Digital Community Research Alliance, UTM.
The focus of her teaching responsibilities is on teaching software engineering and programming courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Besides teaching, she has been given responsibilities as coordinator to undergraduate and post-graduate Programs. She has been appointed as Deputy Coordinator for MSC IT Entrepreneurship Program (in 2001-2002), Coordinator for Research M.Sc dan Ph.D. Programs (in 2006-2009) and Bachelor in Computer Science (Software Engineering) (in 2009-2012). As the coordinators and the head of department, she actively involves in the design, implementation and review of Software Engineering curriculum in UTM such as such as Bachelor of Computer Science (Software Engineering), M.Sc. in Software Engineering, and Engineering Doctorate (Software Engineering).
She has numerous past and current successful postgraduate and undergraduate students under her supervision. She is an active researcher with numerous projects. Most of her projects have granted her various awards in UTM and also external grants. Her research interests cover software reuse, software quality, software testing, and computing and software engineering education. A major part of her research projects focuses on rehabilitation and mobile robotics, healthcare application, real-time embedded systems as well as precision farming applications.
