FABU-RISM Professional Career Talk for Future Surveyors

Johor Bahru, 12 December 2023 | A Professional Career Talk promoting surveying professions was  jointly organized by RISM Johor Branch and Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). In fact, this is an annual programme co-hosted by FABU, UTM & RISM Johor Branch for the 1st Year Students from surveying programme in Geomatics & Land Surveying (GLS), Quantity Surveying (QS) and Property Surveying (PS).

This insightful event was started with a welcoming speech by Sr Tan Pei Ling, Vice Chair of RISM Johor Branch and officiated by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zaly Shah Muhammad Hussein, Deputy Dean (Research Development & Innovation) of FABU, UTM. With the support of four (4) student associations, namely, PEMETA, GEOINFO, QSBINA & PEHARTA, this event gathered more than 120 first year students from Geomatics Engineering, Geoinformatics, Quantity Surveying and Real Estate.

UTM students were enlightened with invaluable tips and information in preparing themselves for a lifetime career advancement by three (3) professional and licensed practitioners from the respective industries. Sr Ezam Ariffin (GLS), Sr Kok Chin Yee (PS) and Sr Alice Tay Lee Yong (QS) were here in FABU to share passion on career path and to bridge the gap and boost their understanding by linking theory with practice in surveying. It allows students to hear from real-life role models who can demonstrate the relevance and connection of what is taught in the classroom.

This program lasted for two and half hours and was a great success. Thank you to all FABU’s lecturer, course coordinator, students association’s advisors and student committee members from PEMETA, GEOINFO, QSBINA & PEHARTA on their cooperation and support to make this event a success. The program is consider part of the faculty’s synergetic collaboration with respective professional surveying institution and industries where it also serves as a medium to empower faculty’s staff members and students to not only organizing the event but also expand their networking with surveying industry partners. Kelvin Kang Wee, TANG received his B. Eng. (Geomatic) (Hons.) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Master of Remote Sensing & GIS from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He completed his Ph.D (Hydrography) from UTM in April 2021. Apparently, he is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying, UTM. His area of interest is in marine positioning, hydrographic surveying, hydrospatial management and imagery-derive bathymetry using satellite remote sensing approach.
