Aligning Your Thesis: Generating Research Questions & Objectives from Your Problem Statement

Once NotebookLM has helped you craft a problem statement, you must instantly anchor it with your Research Questions (RQ) and Research Objectives (RO).

Examiners look for absolute alignment: your RQs must ask how to solve the Problem, and your ROs must actively state the steps to achieve the Goal.

By passing your freshly generated problem statement back into NotebookLM using the R-G-T-F-C framework, you can ensure your research questions and objectives are perfectly synchronized, academically sound, and highly focused.

The Rule of Academic Alignment

Before prompting the AI, it is crucial to understand the logical mirror effect required in a thesis:

  • The Problem > Research Questions (RQ): These convert the empirical gaps or contradictions you found into clear, investigable questions (typically starting with What, How, or To what extent).
  • The Goal > Research Objectives (RO): These turn your questions into actionable milestones. They mirror the RQs exactly, but start with action verbs (typically To evaluate, To analyze, To determine, or To design).

The R-G-T-F-C Prompt for RQs and ROs

Copy and paste this exact prompt into the NotebookLM chat panel immediately after the AI provides your problem statement:

[ROLE]

Act as a senior thesis examination chair and expert research methodology consultant.

[GOAL]

The goal is to derive a perfectly aligned set of Research Questions (RQ) and Research Objectives (RO) based strictly on the problem statement generated in our previous turn.

[TASK]

Your task is to analyze the ‘Problem’ and ‘Goal’ sections from the previous response. First, formulate exactly 3 distinct, high-level Research Questions that directly address the core problem. Second, formulate 3 corresponding Research Objectives that map perfectly to each question.

[FORMAT]

Format the entire output using clear markdown lists under two distinct headings:

❓ Research Questions (RQ)

  • RQ1: [Clear, specific question targeting gap 1]
  • RQ2: [Clear, specific question targeting gap 2]
  • RQ3: [Clear, specific question targeting gap 3]

🎯 Research Objectives (RO)

  • RO1: To [Action verb mapping directly to RQ1…]
  • RO2: To [Action verb mapping directly to RQ2…]
  • RO3: To [Action verb mapping directly to RQ3…]

[CONSTRAINT]

You must maintain a strict 1-to-1 alignment between each RQ and RO (e.g., RO1 must be the direct action required to answer RQ1). Use rigorous academic verbs for the objectives (avoid weak words like ‘to change’ or ‘to learn’; use ‘to analyze’, ‘to evaluate’, ‘to examine’). Do not include any conversational AI introductions or conclusions.
