MECHANICAL & ELECTRICAL WORKS MEASUREMENT (SBEQ3213)

This course is aimed to provide students with knowledge, an understanding and skills of the method of measurement for specialist works (mechanical and electrical engineering works) according to Standard Method of Measurement for Building Works (SMM2) for the purpose of preparation of bills of quantities and estimating. The topic covered will include cold water supply installations, soil and waste disposal installations, underground drainage system, electrical installations, air-conditioning installations, fire fighting installations, telecommunication system, gas and fuel gas installation system.

Course Outcome :

  1. Identify and describe the principles of measurement of mechanical & electrical works as stipulated in the SMM2.
  2. Measure, describe and quantify various specialist works according to the provisions in the Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2)
  3. Use the computer aided measurement software for measurement of mechanical & electrical works.
  4. Present information and express ideas clearly; and work effectively in group activities

COST PLANNING & CONTROL (SBEQ2322)

The aim of this course is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding on the concepts and techniques of cost planning and control and their application in construction project development. This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in planning and controlling costs at various stages of project development. By outlining the costs, the students will be able to check and take necessary remedial action to comply with set targets, taking into consideration other external factors that might influence the probable costs. The concept of life cycle costing will also be introduced in order to enhance the techniques of cost planning and control. The course also provides the platform to develop students’ communication skills and the ability to seek information from various sources.

Course Outcome :

  1. Discuss the principles of cost planning and control in relation to different design and construction stages
  2. Determine range of probable costs, outline cost plan, cost targets, detail cost plan, cost checking and remedial action.
  3. Examine external factors influencing probable costs at different design and construction phases.
  4. Illustrate life-cycle-costing (LCC) concept at design phase.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to seek information from various sources
