How to import SBU car from Australia to Malaysia?

I am writing this post based on my past experience when bringing my Toyota Camry from Newcastle Australlia to Johor Bahru Malaysia. Here are some ideas on the procedures and estimated cost.

1) Contact your shipping agent in Australia. I used Ever Global International (person in charge during that time is Diana Du email: diana.du@everglobalinternational.com.au). They will assist you on the option of shipments available:

Option 1: use container (30 ft or 60 ft). Cost ~AUD 2500. You can ship your car and also your personal belonging inside the container. Your belonging can also be placed inside the car to maximize the space.

Option 2 (I chose this one before): Role on Role Off (RORO). Cost ~AUD 800. (This services is just like you ship your car in a ferry from Kuala Kedah to Langkawi). You need to drop off your car to the Port (in my case, I dropped it at Port Kembla, the closest one to Newcastle). You can also asked them to help on picking up your car in your desired placed but of course with a charges (Newcastle to Port Kembla, add another AUD 800). The agent will advise on the date of drop off.

Note: When drop off your car in the port, make sure you take out all belongings (my husband lost his RayBan sunglasses that he placed inside the glass holder). And also,  make sure you bring toolies to take out your registration plate. If you surrender the plate to RTA, they will refund some money (road tax). Not to forget, asked your insurance company to refund your money if your insurance coverage is still active.

The shipping agent will asked some documents (e.g. Rego, Visa, Passport) for their documentation. They will prepare Bill of Landing for your car clearance in Malaysia port.

2) Contact your agent in Malaysia. I used Mikhir World Trading (03-33232244). With Mikhir, I used their service on custom clearance at the Port Klang, custom tax appealing for reduction. For car plate registration, I did it on my own. With the services, Mikhir charged about RM 1200.

3) It took about 1.5 month for my car to get to Port Klang, and a month for the custom procedures and clearances.

4) Once you back to Malaysia, immediately visit the nearest MITI office to apply for AP (in my case student AP). You need to get there on your own. Bring along documents : passport, student visa, grant of the car, receipt of purchase of the car, any insurance, bill of landing, boarding pass etc (you can get the checklist from the MITI website). Once granted, they will call you for the collection. You need this AP certificate for custom clearance, so provide this AP to your agent.

5) Once your car arrived in the port, your agent will arrange the clearance with custom. The custom will provide the tax. This tax is depending on the model of the car, the car cc, the year of manufacture. The custom was asked for RM 29,000 for my Camry cc 2.4 year 2006 (8 years old). After second appeal, it was reduced to RM24,000.

6) Get your car inspected by Puspakom (RM 50) and registered with JPJ.
