TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

1. Goals of Student Learning:

My goal in teaching is not just to teach my courses, I also encourage my students to develop, increase and sustain their interests in these courses. Besides, I spur them to view the course materials as complete and holistic frameworks by stimulating them to blending the various concepts of the courses through professional application.

In addition, I motivate them to apply the knowledge gained in class to their daily lives, acquire problem-solving methods, think logically, and improve their generic skills. In the end, students understand that the ways to conquer the beauty of knowledge are by reading, thinking and writing. Lastly, I harness all these qualities to nurture students with good moral values and build them as responsible Civil Engineers in future.

2. Personal Philosophy:

In my point of view, I do believe that “teaching” is not only what goes on inside the lecture room but all things that add to the students’ learning experience which come in many forms that are more important than lectures and discussions. For me, teaching is the most important career in which a person is involved in determining the future of the country. As an engineering lecturer, my teaching philosophy is not stationary but a work in progress; developing as I gain experience from research and consultation work, and experiment with different methods in conveying my lectures.

I also implement an open-door policy for students as much as possible. Students do not necessarily meet me for discussion in my office only, but the event can take place anywhere around the faculty area. I treat all my students with absolute equality, regardless of their age, gender, nationality, intellectual ability and backgrounds.

I accept that in being a good teacher is to be a good person. I make myself a role model for students by showing enthusiasm for teaching, truly caring for students and portraying good qualities and manners (akhlak) such as maturity, good communication and interaction, punctuality and knowledge. The same adab is also should be portrayed by students. I believe that proper manner or good etiquette is important in teaching and learning environment.

I usually present the rules in my classroom in the beginning of lecture. I made it clear from the beginning what is the expectation and what would be the implication of ignoring the rules.

3. Belief and practices of assessment and evaluation:

I believe that assessment should be conducted to measure students’ ability in understanding the knowledge delivered. Based on that, I as a lecturer can evaluate my teaching effectiveness and performance in class. From that I can reflect and adjust the way I convey the lecture in order to make them understand better. I am also emphasize on giving feedback to students. I would like to have my own policy which is to return their assignments, quizzes and test papers within 2 weeks after submission.

Teaching and learning activities are planned to suit the designed course learning outcome.  The assessment methods are also aligned to the course learning outcome intended for the course. Both summative and formative assessment are conducted to evaluate the teaching and learning experience by students.

4. Self-reflection of teaching development over time and how this relates to future goals

I never stop working to try to improve my style of lecture. To be able to make students understand well the concept of the fundamental knowledge in the course brings satisfaction to me. Real transport project and situation assist me in delivering the lecture in a better way. This approach makes the lectures become more interesting, interactive and easily understood. The application of power points, videos and multimedia, real pictures that show real situation and attractive pictures are applied as the teaching tools.

Feedbacks and comments from my student are very important for my continuous quality improvement (CQI). The feedbacks will be used to resolve any errors pertaining to knowledge dissemination techniques and well as in the course content. This continuous improvement is very important for future betterment of the student learning aspect and as well as for my teaching carrier.
