The implementation of online FYP presentation is an example of the implementation of a new norm of post pandemic of COVID-19 that is very flexible for all candidates and panels. This method also cost-effective, time and energy saving compared to face to face presentation.

For the viva assessment, they are required to share the youtube link that represents their presentation and followed by Q & A session.

How to apply grant?

  1. Start with internal grant (compulsory)
  2. Apply for external grant (secured FRGS within 1-2 years after PhD)
  3. Assign at least 1 MSc. student for the grant
  4. Strategy: complete the grant ASAP and apply a new project
  5. Must complete and submit the final report to close the project
  6. Take care of your own grant record (blacklisted drop your reputation)
  7. Project progress (activity and claims)
  8. Set higher KPI for grant (high impact journal, exhibition, patent, filing, etc.)
  9. After 3-4 years, must apply PRGS for product prototype and commercialization.

How to find a Research Topic?

  1. Follow the university direction (niche area)
  2. Align with the national research cluster and strategic agenda
  3. Consistent from the beginning until the end (people will recognize you in your field)
  4. Need to set up networking from various university
  5. Consider existing facilities/ avoid idea to purchase new equipment (if possible)
  6. Be creative within your previous PhD/ postdoc topic
  7. Start with internal university grant
  8. FYP project as medium for exploration.

  • Publication according to the student’s project objectives (minimum Msc. = 2, PhD = 3 ISI journal)

  • Chapter 3 and 4: Original research articles (Objective 1, 2, 3)

I want to share some tips for supervision as been explained by Wan Azmi Wan Hamzah (2020), a Professor from Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Here are seven roles of supervisor to his/ her postgraduate students:

  1. Meeting the students (weekly meeting)
  2. Guide to literature study (related recent topic)
  3. Guide for research materials and facilities

How to assess value of a property amidst uncertainty?

Here are seven steps to measure the value:

  1. Find out the actual asking prices and rentals from few sources.
  2. Analysed the yields an returns, and the projected growth.
  3. Observe the changes in the market trends.
  4. Check the occupancy rate in the immediate vicinity.
  5. For shophouses, assess the ratio of shops to occupied resiential units. The higher the ratio, the better (eg: 1:20 to 1:30).
  6. For offices, find out if the tenant intends to move out and if possible, the profitability of the tenants.
  7. Net selling prices of development project [eg: after all rebate, discount, freebies ( buy one unit free one Myvi car) etc.]
