PG student’s preparation (read: before you meet your supervisor for the first time)

Here are some tips for students who wish to discuss their proposal with their supervisor. My personal advice…

  1. First of all, please discuss with your supervisor about his/her supervision ground rules. For example, meeting frequency, publication output, etc.
  2. Prepare a milestone. Perhaps a simple Gantt chart that shows plan of your study for current semester (Your supervisor would love to see this. Indirectly, it shows your commitment towards your study)
  3. You might wonder how to search for articles. Please discuss about this with your supervisor. He/she is more than happy to guide you about information literacy skills.
  4. Discuss your research topic. Whatever topic that comes in your mind, discuss it with your supervisor. Your supervisor would like to know what is your research interest as well. He/she might support/reject your research topic, but a good supervisor will give a suggestion. When you have your research topic, it shows that you are serious in your research and you did not come to us with empty hand.

Animation in Multimedia (Recorded Learning Session)

This is a recorded learning session that I have recorded earlier with my ODL students.

A 2 and half hour of my lecture session

In brief, animation is a series of still images that move in a sequence within seconds. That fast movement of still images will eventually create an illusion to our eyes.

A talk by Prof Zaidatun – Constructing an Effective Teaching Portfolio

A poster

So, we were having a talk conducted by the Dean of FSSH about Teaching Portfolio. An interesting topic. The dean remind us that our core business is teaching, therefore, as an academia we need to have a solid teaching portfolio, to promote ourselves and to promote our expertise. All of these things need to be documented. Our views on teaching, our teaching strategies, philosophy and personal believes on teaching need to be documented. We also need to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses in our teaching practices. Besides, we do teaching portfolio for continuous improvement of our teaching process.

So the scope of Teaching Portfolio made by UTMLead, UTM are:

  1. Statement of Teaching Philosophy. It should be as genuine as possible. It should come from the heart. Basically teaching philosophy is your own views on your role as a teacher.
  2. Statement of Teaching Responsibilities. Our responsibilities as a teacher.
  3. Statement of Teaching Methodology. Methodology here means theory and strategies you have used in your teachings.
  4. Summarized description of our teaching approach in class.
