RCE Iskandar Sustainable & Low Carbon Schools Exhibition

Introduction

The RCE Iskandar Sustainable and Low Carbon Schools Exhibition is an exhibition and competition designed to provide an opportunity for schools to showcase their efforts in creating sustainable and low carbon schools. This is also to give recognition to their green efforts and contributions towards developing a sustainable Johor and reducing carbon emission.

Since its inception in 2015, the annual exhibition and competition has become a platform for schools to learn from each other, build networks between schools and other agencies and develop a community of practice in education for sustainable development (ESD). With the introduction of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), this exhibition further strengthens the commitment of Malaysia towards realising the goals,

 The exhibition aims at:

  1. Giving opportunity for schools in Johor to showcase schools’ efforts related to low carbon and sustainable development
  2. Giving recognition to schools in Johor that contributed to sustainable and low carbon
  3. Disseminating low carbon society for Johor to schools
  4. Encouraging schools in Johor to organise more activities on low carbon society
  5. Showcasing green efforts by schools in MBIP to other parts of Johor
  6. Creating networks between schools and experts that have interest in low carbon society
  7. Realising Pelan Tindakan Pendidikan Kelestarian Johor 2019-2023

Parallel to the exhibition are workshop sessions conducted by experts from various organisations and backgrounds. These workshops aims to provide knowledge and information on green actions to the audience.

History

The exhibition started in 2015 as a part of a research project under the SATREPS to collect information of schools in Iskandar Malaysia in LCS related initiatives. Schools in Iskandar Malaysia were invited to prepare a short profile to be submitted and to participate at the exhibition to showcase their initiatives using posters or other forms of material. It was name Iskandar Malaysia Sustainable & Low Carbon Schools Exhibition 2015. During the exhibition, RCE Iskandar was launched. This first exhibition was supported by JICA and JPNJ. The exhibition received very positive feedback from the schools that participated the exhibition mainly because the recognition given has boosted their school principals’ attention to expand the LCS initiatives at schools.

In 2016, the same exhibition was repeated but covered the whole state. It was named Johor Sustainable and Low Carbon Schools Exhibition 2016 and was supported by JICA and JPNJ. The previous two exhibition was held at UTM. In 2017, the exhibition was upgraded to an international level and named RCE Iskandar Sustainable & Low Carbon Schools Exhibition 2017. It was held at UniKL Pasir Gudang in collaboration with IRDA under the Iskandar Learning Festival. In 2018, the exhibition was organized in conjunction with Iskandar Learning Festival 2018 and co-organized by JPNJ and Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri (MBIP). It was organized at Sutera Mall, Johor Bahru to attract public’s attention. More than 1500 visitors were recorded in 1 day. MBIP continued to support this exhibition in 2019 and it was held at the AEON Mall Bukit Indah.
