‘Links Between Ceativity and CAD’ now in the Radar….

123 Design

December 5, 2013 — CAD

I am intrigued by the research by Aede Hatib Musta’amal and the links between Creativty and CAD(Computer Aided Design). Other research surrounding this debate suggests that CAD is a presentation tool. I am trying to incorporate some element of CAD into each unit this year to allow students to gain those skills vertically throughout Grade 6-9. In a research paper dated 2008, titled “Links between Creativity and CAD: Reality or fiction, Musta’amal et al describe various creative behaviours demonstrated by masters students using CAD. Behaviour recognised as creative were spontaneity, risk-taking, continuous reflection, fluency of Ideas and displaying curiosity. The list is not exhaustive but I have just mentioned a few that I think relate to the IB Learner profile.

I have certainly found the implementation of CAD is motivating for students as it allows them to produce a professional standard of design ideas. As Ken O Connor described Mastery is essential for student achievement. Selecting the right software is also essential, over the past 18 months I have been using Google Sketch up however I have recently started using 123 Design by AutoCad. Both are free to use, I am still in two minds which is the best.

Below are some examples of Grade 9 design for the unit Build for life. Students explored a real world problem of their choice to investigate and inspire their designs.

Being in such a unique environment, The KAUST School has the luxury of using some of the facilities at the University. The students and I took a trip to visit CAD/CAM in action within the context of a Scientific Lab. Students were able to have some of their designs brought to reality using the 3D Printer, we also saw a 3D Scanner, the students were blown away by the technology.

How Do We Learn to Love Innovation?

Eddie Norman
2013, Vol. 18, No. 3,

Abstract

It was in September 2010 towards the end of my full-time
academic career that I was fortunate to be invited to be a
Visiting Professor at UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia).

This was a fascinating journey at many levels, but, perhaps
curiously, one of the more enduring memories was that of
the young woman who, at the end of an undergraduate
class that I had been privileged to take, asked the question
that forms the title of this Editorial.

DSC_0154Pic 2: Prof Eddie Norman deliver his lecture

The class had centred
on ‘creativity and designing’ and, unsurprisingly, I had
decided to speak in relation to my teaching experience at
Loughborough. Looking back at the PowerPoint slides, I
structured my talk around these themes:
• Having found a good design context
• You need to be…
• Determined modellers
• Independent thinkers
• Experiential in approach
• Analytical
• Skilful
