An elderly man was on the operating table, about to be operated on by his son, a famous surgeon. Just before they put him under, he asked to speak to his son:

“Don’t be nervous, boy, just do your best and just remember, if it doesn’t go well, if something happens to me… your mother is going to come and live with you and your family.”

Character

“If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. But do not care to convince him. Men will believe what they see. Let them see.”

— Henry David Thoreau

Story

5 years ago I threw a bag of water from the balcony onto the head of an unfamiliar girl. And yesterday I learned that five years ago my wife (we met three years ago) was going on a date with a man who was going to propose to her, but some idiot threw a bag of water from a balcony right onto her head, and she couldn’t go in wet clothes. Her boyfriend considered this a very frivolous attitude toward him, and they broke up. Five years ago I ruined the wedding of my current wife! I’m proud of myself!

Gratitude

“True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.”

Financial Sustainability

“Suckers think that you cure greed with money, addiction with substances, expert problems with experts, banking with bankers, economics with economists, and debt crises with debt spending.”

Leadership

“Self-leaders do not look for followers because they are busily pursuing their influencial dreams that followers will trace and ask for. Followers look for influence and that can be obtained from self-leaders.”

Education

“I ended up dropping out of high school. I’m a high school dropout, which I’m not proud to say, … I had some teachers that I still think of fondly and were amazing to me. But I had other teachers who said, ‘You know what? This dream of yours is a hobby. When are you going to give it up?’ I had teachers who I could tell didn’t want to be there. And I just couldn’t get inspired by someone who didn’t want to be there.”

— Hilary Swank

Communication

“Never take a person’s dignity: it is worth everything to them, and nothing to you.”
