Alhamdulillah, 1 day mini workshop on ABAQUS HANDS ON FOR BEGINNER has been conducted for MKAJ1113 Tunnel Engineering. This course was attended by both perdana and pesisir student (from Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur kampus) and conducted successfully on 24 April 2022.

The course was delivered by Dr. Siti Norafida Jusoh, PhD in geotechnics and soil-structure interaction. A hands on session on tunnel-soil model in soft ground has been delivered. This mini workshop was conducted online and managed to cover some basic introduction on Finite element method (FEM) concept, available tools in ABAQUS, differences of ABAQUS compare to other existing FEM software, and phase by phase involved in modelling a tunnel excavation model. The sharing conducted is based on her experience developed the tunnel-soil model by using ABAQUS 6.14. Interactive session was conducted as some of participants eager to know the ability of ABAQUS and in the same time increase the understanding on the differences of 2D and 3D modelling (regarding the face pressure model). For those who interested to view on ABAQUS, you may get the student version from the https://edu.3ds.com/en/software/abaqus-student-edition.

In this course, a sharing of pipe jacking experience also has been delivered by one of the student, Lee Jie Sheng, which is based on his experience in the pipe jacking project for Singapore. Interesting information such as phase by phase progress on the project, how the pipe jacking construction was carried out, design calculation on the pipe model that considering ULS and SLS state design and the relationship of volume loss design to the actual practice were shared by him.
To sum up, Alhamdulillah a short, benefited and memorable session for the participants was successfully conducted. By having this short course, hopefully, more curiosity on the course and understanding on the modelling concepts itself can be developed for a future breath-taking of tunnel engineering in Malaysia.
