D8-NPIR Summit 2025: Strengthening International Collaboration in Research and Innovation

I had the opportunity to join the final day of the D8-Network of Pioneers for Research and Innovation (D8-NPIR) Summit 2025 held in Johor Bahru. The session focused on the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between participating delegations, marking an important milestone in fostering future collaborations among member countries.

It was an inspiring experience to witness representatives from eight D8 nations come together with a shared commitment to advance cooperation in research, innovation, and education.

With Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) now assuming the Chair of D8-NPIR for the next two years, I believe this platform will continue to strengthen international partnerships and open new avenues for impactful collaboration in the years ahead.

NALI2025 Workshop 2: Using Generative AI in Teaching and Learning!

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a workshop on “Generative AI in Teaching and Learning” which explored practical ways in which artificial intelligence can support and enhance the teaching and learning (T&L) process.

The session focused on the use of ChatGPT and Canva as powerful tools to simplify lesson preparation and content creation, design more interactive and engaging learning materials, and foster greater student participation and collaboration in the classroom. This experience underscored the transformative potential of generative AI in creating innovative, student-centered learning environments.

NALI2025 Workshop 1: Learning AI tools in ODL development

I recently had the privilege of attending the NALI 2025 workshop entitled “SIM Development for ODL Using AI Tools.” The session provided valuable insights into the integration of artificial intelligence in designing and developing course materials for Open and Distance Learning (ODL).

The workshop highlighted the use of various AI platforms—including ChatGPT, Gemini, CoPilot, and Whisk—which enable educators to:

  • Systematically design and structure ODL course content.

  • Develop more effective and impactful prompts to enhance instructional delivery.

  • Facilitate the creation of dynamic, interactive, and high-quality ODL learning modules.

This initiative represents an important step towards advancing innovation in teaching and learning, in line with the digital transformation of higher education.

Standard Committee

Honoured to contribute as part of the working group for the review of MS1759: Geographic Information — Feature Catalogue.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to participate in a review workshop held in February 2025, organised under the Department of Standards Malaysia. The session brought together experts and practitioners to refine and strengthen this important national standard.

I hope this small contribution helps support the geospatial community in Malaysia — and benefits the wider public through improved geospatial data practices and interoperability.

Program Geoinformatik – Sejarah sikit

Assalamu’alaykum,

Jadi, sebelum kita teruskan lebih mendalam tentang program Geoinformatik ini, kita kena kenal dulu kan? tak kenal maka tak cinta…. Jadi nak kenal, kenalah faham sikit2 sejarah program ini.

So, program ini (dahulu dipanggil kursus) telah mula diperkenalkan pada tahun 1994. kalau ikut tahun akademiknya, kira 1994/1995. Ketika itu, GIS agak baru di Malaysia, dan Kerajaan Malaysia ketika itu baru memperkenalkan Infrastuktur Kebangsaan bagi Sistem Maklumat Tanah (National Infrastructure for land Information System (NaLIS)) pada tahun 1997 (NaLIS).

~cerita tentang NaLIS dan kemudiannya ditambah baik kepada MaCGDI kita bincang lain kali~

Jadi, program ini dibangunkan dengan tujuan mengisi kekosongan dalam membangunkan dan meningkatkan NaLIS ketika itu. Program ini kemudiannya ditambahbaik, dengan beberapa penambahbaikan setiap 5 tahun. Terkini, program ini telah ditambahbaik silibusnya pada tahun 2018 (yeah, tahun ni), dan telah diluluskan oleh Senat Universiti.

Setakat ini, ramai graduan Program Geoinformatik (Sarjana Muda Sains (Geoinformatik)) dari UTM ini telah bekerja di pelbagai bidang…. kalau hendak tahu bidang apa? lain kali kita cerita. malah ada yang bekerja di luar negara, dan menjadi pakar di sana! hebat mereka ini…

orait, itu sahaja nak dikongsikan kali ini.

Percubaan implementasi Active Learning

Assalamu’alaykum,

semalam cuba mempraktikkan apa yang dibelajar dalam kursus SPPT selama 3 minggu pada bulan Ogos yang lalu. Percubaan untuk melaksanakan active learning (pembelajaran aktif) dan juga blended learning (pembelajaran campuran).

Kaedah ini menggabungkan teknik pembelajaran, dan tidak hanya bergantung kepada syarahan semata-mata. pelajar dilibatkan bersama dalam pengajaran, di mana pelajar akan sentiasa berbincang solusi bagi setiap persoalan yang timbul. terdapat banyak teknik yang boleh dilakukan.

kali ini kaedah think-pair-share dan juga mind map dilaksanakan. selain menggunakan kahoot untuk integrasikan dengan teknologi terkini dalam pembelajaran.

diharapkan pelajar dapat lebih manfaat dari kaedah pembelajaran seperti ini di masa akan datang.

Program Geospatial dan Kartografi Marine Cat B

Assalamu’alaykum,

selepas selesai berkursus SPPT 2017 bersama rakan2, minggu lepas telah ditugaskan untuk mengajar satu modul dalam program Geospatial dan Kartografi Marin Cat B. Program ini adalah dengan kerjasama TLDM, Geospatial Imaging & Information RG, Photo Laser Grammetry, FGHT, dan diakui oleh FIG, IHO dan ICA.

ianya bertujuan untuk melahirkan tenaga mahir dalam bidang kartografi dan Geospatial bagi marin di peringkat antarabangsa.

diharapkan peserta yang hadir mendapat ilmu dan pengetahuan secukupnya bagi membantu mereka di masa akan datang.
