Off to Teluk Gorek – Visiting GIS Training Camp!

Just completed a site visit to the GIS Training Camp (KLGIS) at Teluk Gorek, Mersing!

The KLGIS (GIS Training Camp) program is a crucial field platform for students to translate theoretical knowledge into practical reality. Throughout this camp, they have the opportunity to strengthen their technical skills and gain hands-on experience in various fieldwork processes, including:

🔹 Traverse Surveying 🔹 Detailing 🔹 Airborne Mapping 🔹 LiDAR Technology Applications

Aside from overseeing the smooth execution of the program, the main purpose of my visit was to provide moral support and a boost of encouragement. A massive kudos and congratulations to the dedicated camp facilitators and the resilient students who are braving the challenges of fieldwork out there.

GeoConnect ’25 – Lawatan ke Pusat Geospatial Negara

Last Tuesday, the GeoConnect 25 delegation had an enriching visit to the Pusat Geospatial Negara (PGN) — the national authority coordinating geospatial data and standards in Malaysia under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.

We were welcomed and had a productive discussion with Director of PGN, Rusliza Hanim binti Maarif, gaining strategic insights into PGN’s role in driving geospatial coordination, data sharing, and national spatial data infrastructure.

The session continued with a comprehensive presentation by Sr Dr. Noor Anim Zanariah binti Yahaya, where she elaborated on the functions, history, and key initiatives of PGN — from policy development and standards to outreach and technical reference services.

We also learned about data acquisition processes at PGN, including how users and institutions can request and access geospatial data for planning, research, and application development.

The visit concluded with an interactive Q&A session with students, offering them firsthand exposure to national-level geospatial data governance and practical engagement with PGN experts.

This experience was made even more meaningful thanks to the excellent coordination by students from the Geoinfo Club, UTM, who organised the logistics and engagement throughout the visit.

D8-NPIR Summit 2025: Strengthening International Collaboration in Research and Innovation

I had the opportunity to join the final day of the D8-Network of Pioneers for Research and Innovation (D8-NPIR) Summit 2025 held in Johor Bahru. The session focused on the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between participating delegations, marking an important milestone in fostering future collaborations among member countries.

It was an inspiring experience to witness representatives from eight D8 nations come together with a shared commitment to advance cooperation in research, innovation, and education.

With Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) now assuming the Chair of D8-NPIR for the next two years, I believe this platform will continue to strengthen international partnerships and open new avenues for impactful collaboration in the years ahead.

GIS Training Camp 1 2025 Site Visit

Last week I went to Teluk Gorek, Mersing to visit 2nd year students of Geoinformatics that are currently doing their GIS Training Camp 1.

This time GIS Training Camp 1 was held in Telok Gorek, Mersing. With a total number of 48 students. They collected all the data for the resort and later will be processed and stored in a geospatial database.

I hope this experience will help them facing the real world problems and able to provide solutions related to issues they’ll face later.

Courtesy Visit to MBOT: Strengthening Academic and Professional Collaboration

I had the opportunity to pay a courtesy visit to the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) to discuss key matters related to the Bachelor of Science in Geoinformatics with Honours programme at the Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying (FABU), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

The main objectives of the visit were to discuss on the current curriculum and explore enhancements aligned with industry needs. Besides that, this discussion also important to understand the procedures and guidelines related to academic programme registration with MBOT.

Other than curriculum matters, this courtesy visit also discuss on exploring any opportunities for closer collaboration between FABU UTM and MBOT in student activities and professional development programmes.

The discussion was meaningful and timely to ensure that our academic offerings remain relevant, industry-driven, and capable of producing professionally recognised and competent graduates.

Thank you to the team at MBOT for the warm welcome and continuous support in strengthening geoinformatics education in Malaysia.

Program Geoinformatik – Sejarah sikit

Assalamu’alaykum,

Jadi, sebelum kita teruskan lebih mendalam tentang program Geoinformatik ini, kita kena kenal dulu kan? tak kenal maka tak cinta…. Jadi nak kenal, kenalah faham sikit2 sejarah program ini.

So, program ini (dahulu dipanggil kursus) telah mula diperkenalkan pada tahun 1994. kalau ikut tahun akademiknya, kira 1994/1995. Ketika itu, GIS agak baru di Malaysia, dan Kerajaan Malaysia ketika itu baru memperkenalkan Infrastuktur Kebangsaan bagi Sistem Maklumat Tanah (National Infrastructure for land Information System (NaLIS)) pada tahun 1997 (NaLIS).

~cerita tentang NaLIS dan kemudiannya ditambah baik kepada MaCGDI kita bincang lain kali~

Jadi, program ini dibangunkan dengan tujuan mengisi kekosongan dalam membangunkan dan meningkatkan NaLIS ketika itu. Program ini kemudiannya ditambahbaik, dengan beberapa penambahbaikan setiap 5 tahun. Terkini, program ini telah ditambahbaik silibusnya pada tahun 2018 (yeah, tahun ni), dan telah diluluskan oleh Senat Universiti.

Setakat ini, ramai graduan Program Geoinformatik (Sarjana Muda Sains (Geoinformatik)) dari UTM ini telah bekerja di pelbagai bidang…. kalau hendak tahu bidang apa? lain kali kita cerita. malah ada yang bekerja di luar negara, dan menjadi pakar di sana! hebat mereka ini…

orait, itu sahaja nak dikongsikan kali ini.

Program Geoinformatik – ni program apa?

Assalamu’alaykum,

GEOINFORMATIK

Ramai yang pernah terbaca, atau ternampak perkataan Geoinformatik ini. Terutama kepada pelajar matriks, STPM, malah tahun asasi di mana2 universiti. Dan ramai tidak tahu apa sebenarnya Geoinformatik ni. Jadi, saya ingin berkongsi sedikit apa benda program Geoinformatik ni….

Sebelum bermula, saya nak tanya, pernah tak anda menggunakan Google Map? atau Waze? atau OpenStreetMap? pernah naik Grab? Apa persamaan kesemua apps di atas? Ada ke orang jaga kat belakang apps ni untuk pastikan info korang dapat tu betul ke tidak?

Sebenarnya, kesemua apps itu menggunakan maklumat geografi, dan disimpan dalam satu sistem, yang dinamakan Sistem Maklumat Geografi (Geographic Information System, GIS). Jadi GIS hari ini, telah digunapakai secara meluas, akan tetapi, orang tak tahu yang ianya adalah GIS.

Ok, apa kaitan GIS dengan program Geoinformatik ni?

Secara ringkas, program Geoinformatik ni, kita akan belajar disiplin ilmu disebalik GIS ni.

Disiplin ilmu sampai kita boleh keluarkan apps atau pandai gunakan apps dengan peta-peta bagai ni.

Program Geoinformatik ada je ditawarkan di Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM Skudai… di UTM nama penuhnya adalah Program Sarjana Muda Sains (Geoinformatik). haaa… tu dia panjang….

Dalam program Geoinformatik ini, kita akan faham bagaimana nak cari data-data jalan, petrol station, restoran dan apa2 maklumat yang korang nak cari… Lepas tu, macamana nak simpan data, macamana nak cari jalan paling pantas, dan macamana nak tunjuk semua data-data dan maklumat ni dalam pelbagai gadget. Nak tunjuk guna komputer? handphone?

haaa… semua ada dalam program ni.

So, jika anda ingin jadi salah seorang yang “pembangun” GIS di Malaysia ini, Program Geoinformatik adalah program yang sesuai untuk anda! Program ini ada ditawarkan di UTM, dahulu di bawah Fakulti Geoinformasi dan Harta Tanah. Namun berkat sinergi, fakulti ini telah dinamakan semula sebagai Fakulti Alam Bina dan Ukur, atau FABU (Faculty of Built Environment and Surveying).

Orait, lain kali saya akan berkongsi lagi apa lagi yang ada dalam program Geoinformatik ni..

Jumpa lagi!!
