Keep Learning, Keep Exploring, My Dear Daughters!

I am writing this not to elevate my daughters, but to share a little reflection. I have never pressured them to win or compete with their peers. After all, what can we really expect from 4-year-old kids? Let them play, learn, and have fun with their friends at kindergarten.

According to learning theories, children at this age are naturally curious and eager to explore their environment. They learn best through play, social interaction, repetition, and sensory experiences.

But what Kakak achieved last week was something I honestly never expected.
Believe me, I have never pushed her to win or to outperform others.
For me, not crying when going to kindergarten is already more than good enough.

I also have to give credit to their Ibu, who spends more time with them colouring pictures. Usually, when they finish their colouring, they run to me proudly, hoping I’ll say,
“Wow, this is beautiful!”

Oh no… I am not exactly that kind of father. Poor them.
At this age, they are developing their social-emotional skills.

If their colouring is neat, I will say,
“Wow, this is the best colouring I’ve ever seen!”
Of course, they’ll be so happy and start singing.

But if it’s not neat, I try to be honest, not by saying “This is not beautiful,” but by guiding them gently:
“Why did you colour the tree purple? Can you see outside the window… what colour is the tree?”

Usually, they will sulk or cry a little, but I feel it’s important to teach them reality gently so they don’t grow up feeling comfortable with only praise.

And yes, Babah also won first place in the poem recitation competition held during Kakak’s and Adik’s Kindergarten Bulan Kebangsaan celebration.

Now, Kakak and Adik have to treat:

  1. Babah for reciting the poem with flair and style.
  2. Ibu for being the scriptwriter, helped by ChatGPT, and the dedicated videographer.
  3. Nenek for lending her wonderful props from Block 7, Felda BRB. Hopefully Block 7 wins too.
  4. Pakcik Acap for working his magic as the video editor.

To Kakak, Babah is so proud of you.
To Adik, Babah is also proud of you, even though you are not in the top three.
Keep learning, keep exploring.
