I was involved as a researcher in a collaborative IRU-MRUN research between the Malaysian Research Universities (UTM, UKM and UM) and Australian Innovative Research Universities (La Trobe University and James Cook University). The name of the project is HEALS. Opss HEALS is an acronym of  Higher Education Active Learning Spaces. HEALS project aims to investigate the impact of innovative learning spaces on relevant institutional outcomes and to recommend specific points of focus (pedagogy, space, technology and the intersections between them) for improved ROIs (Returns of Investment) on learning spaces. One of the activities in the research was the visit to learning spaces in universities in Malaysia and Australia. Here I share some pictures of the learning spaces.

My First Experience As An Interviewer

I was appointed for the first time as an interviewer for the prospective undergraduate students in education program in Faculty of Education UTM for the next semester intake. The interview session was conducted in Pusat Islam Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Since this is my first time being an interviewer, I was so enthusiastic to meet and interact with the potential secondary school teachers. I made a homework about the frequently asked interview questions for prospective students in the field of education. Based on my experience during the interview session, I find women candidates are better than men candidates. They have lots of ideas to talk about after I gave the questions. Otherwise men candidates are more likely to answer briefly. So is the level of confidence which women candidates were found to have a higher level of confidence than men candidates. However there are also male candidates who have the characteristics to be a good teacher in the future.

Here I share some of the questions I asked to the candidates:

  1. Tell us about yourself. What would you like us to know about you?
  2. What is a unique quality specific to you?
  3. What are your three most important reasons for wanting to be a teacher?
  4. Do you know what is kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi (KBAT)? In your opinion, why KBAT is introduced in our education system?
  5. In Malaysian education blueprint, there are five system aspirations for the Malaysian education system. Can you explain us what are those five aspirations?
  6. Why do you want to become a teacher? I pretty sure that you have heard about the roles of teachers in schools nowadays. They not only teach, but they have to do other things like key in data to the system, clerical work, and many more. So do you think you are capable of dealing with all this?
  7. A homework was due at the end of a two-week unit. Ali didn’t meet the deadline. He tells his parents that he did not have enough time to finish it. His mother is a Pengerusi PIBG sekolah. What would you say or do?
  8. Chee is doing poorly in your class. You talk with her, and she tells you that she considers you the poorest teacher she has ever met. What would you do?

Buku Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT) oleh Fakulti Pendidikan UTM

Buku ini diterbitkan untuk membantu para pendidik yang berminat memahami dengan lebih terperinci mengenai Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT) dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Tanpa kefahaman yang baik tentulah menimbulkan kesukaran kepada para pendidik untuk melaksanakan KBAT, yang menjadi salah satu syarat keberhasilan pelaksanaan Pendidikan Abad Ke-21 di negara ini. Buku ini ditulis dalam lapan bab. Bab 1 menjelaskan tentang beberapa perkara dalam system pendidikan Negara, Bab 2 Falsafah dan Konsep Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi, Bab 3 Strategi Pengajaran Berkesan Bagi Memupuk KBAT (Pembelajaran Berfikrah dan Peta Pemikiran), Bab 4 Strategi Pengajaran Berkesan Bagi Memupuk KBAT (Penyelesaian Masalah Berstruktur dan Kaedah Bansho), Bab 5 Strategi Pengajaran Berkesan Bagi Memupuk KBAT (Kaedah Heuristik dan Model Blok), Bab 6 Strategi Pengajaran (Kaedah Inkuiri), Bab 7 Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi (KBAT) Berdasarkan Aspek Kurikulum, Pedagogi dan Pentaksiran, dan Bab 8 Pentaksiran Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) dan Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS). Penulis-penulis buku ini terdiri daripada PM Dr. Johari Surif, Dr. Nor Hasniza Ibrahim, Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah dan PM Dr. Yusof Boon.

Malaysia menunjukkan keputusan yang tidak memberangsangkan dalam pentaksiran antarabangsa TIMSS dan PISA yang menguji kemahiran berfikir aras tinggi (KBAT). Sehubungan itu, salah satu inisiatif Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) untuk menangani isu berkenaan ialah menambahbaik inisiatif berkaitan KBAT dan mengemaskini kurikulum sekolah rendah dan menengah agar selari dengan piawaian antarabangsa. Bahagian Pembangunan Kurikulum (BPK) menyatakan bahawa tiga elemen utama dalam melaksanakan KBAT ialah kurikulum, pedagogi dan pentaksiran. Buku ini mengandungi bab-bab yang berkaitan dengan penyelidikan yang merangkumi ketiga-tiga elemen tersebut. Bab 1; Keupayaan dan Kreativiti Pelajar Menyelesaikan Masalah Matematik Bukan Rutin, Bab 2; Pembangunan Instrumen Kecekapan Numerasi Pelajar Orang Asli, Bab 4; Tahap Pemikiran Statistik Pelajar Tingkatan Empat di Daerah Ledang, Bab 5; Pembinaan Kuiz Atas Talian Bagi Soalan KBAT Matematik Berdasarkan Reka Bentuk TIMSS, dan Bab 6; Cabaran Dalam Pelaksanaan Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3): Matematik memberi fokus kepada elemen pentaksiran. Manakala Bab 3; Kesediaan Guru-Guru Sains Sekolah Rendah Terhadap Pendekatan Peta Pemikiran i-Think menyentuh aspek pedagogi.

Tahniah 5 Universiti Penyelidikan Malaysia!

Semua lima universiti penyelidikan Malaysia kini tersenarai dalam kalangan 300 universiti terbaik dunia, berdasarkan QS World University Rankings 2018 yang diumumkan baru-baru ini.

Tahniah buat UTM yang kini berada di top 1% universiti terbaik di dunia.

Paling membanggakan, dalam kalangan negara Asia Tenggara (ASEAN), Malaysia mempunyai lima daripada 10 universiti terbaik iaitu Universiti Malaya di tangga ke-3, Universiti Putra Malaysia di tangga ke-4, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia di tangga ke-5, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia di tangga ke-7 dan Universiti Sains Malaysia di tangga ke-8.

 

Dan tahniah juga buat Fakulti Pendidikan UTM yang kini berada di ranking 151-200 dunia mengikut subjek (pendidikan).

Ambilkira Kepelbagaian Kecerdasan Murid Dalam Proses Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran (PdP)

Penulis baru sahaja pulang dari Indonesia untuk memenuhi jemputan sebagai pembentang keynote di dua persidangan antarabangsa di dua buah kota di sana. Usai penulis membentangkan kertas kerja, peserta persidangan yang kebanyakannya pendidik di negara tersebut bertanyakan soalan yang hampir sama kepada penulis iaitu berkaitan bagaimana untuk menarik minat murid terhadap matematik. Sebagaimana di Malaysia, matematik juga merupakan mata pelajaran teras yang wajib dipelajari oleh murid di Indonesia. Jawapan penulis kepada mereka ialah, untuk menarik minat murid terhadap matematik, kita sebagai pendidik terlebih dahulu perlu memahami apakah kelebihan atau ciri dominan yang dimiliki oleh seseorang murid. Apabila kita sudah memahami apakah kelebihan yang dimiliki oleh mereka, maka kaedah pembelajaran boleh disesuaikan dengan kelebihan tersebut. Menurut Ketua Pengarah Pelajaran Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr Khair bin Mohamad Yusof, guru perlu berani meneroka pelbagai cabang ilmu untuk mempelbagaikan kaedah dan teknik pengajaran berkesan. Menurutnya lagi, dalam arus pembelajaran yang serba maju, proses pengajaran yang berpusatkan murid perlu membabitkan penyertaan keseluruhan murid untuk pengisian aktiviti kolaboratif dan koperatif dalam kelas. Barangkali ada yang berpandangan bahawa agak keterlaluan untuk guru mengambil tahu perkara-perkara tersebut untuk setiap murid. Bagaimanapun, menurut Menteri Pendidikan, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, guru yang berjiwa besar dan dinamik seharusnya bersedia untuk memberi ruang dan peluang kepada muridnya meningkatkan pencapaian secara berterusan. Daripada situ, potensi sebenar setiap murid dapat dikembangkan ke tahap yang optimum. Menurut beliau lagi yang dipetik sempena perutusan Hari Guru di laman sesawang Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM), guru perlu sentiasa memastikan anak didiknya diberikan pendedahan yang betul menerusi proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran serta pelbagai aktiviti sepanjang berada di sekolah. Terdapat banyak kerangka yang boleh digunakan untuk memahami kelebihan yang dimiliki oleh seseorang murid. Menurut Howard Gardner (1983), setiap murid itu sekurang-kurangnya mempunyai satu kecerdasan dari tujuh kecerdasan.

Tujuh kecerdasan tersebut adalah kecerdasan linguistik, kecerdasan logik-matematik, kecerdasan spatial/ visual ruang, kecerdasan muzik, kecerdasan intrapersonal, kecerdasan interpersonal dan kecerdasan kinestik-jasmani. Oleh itu, bagi seseorang pendidik khususnya, mereka perlu menjangkakan bahawa tidak semua murid dapat mempelajari apa yang diajarkan kepada mereka kerana kecerdasan setiap dari mereka yang pelbagai. Kecerdasan linguistik merujuk kepada kebolehan murid menggunakan bahasa secara lisan dan bertulis, keupayaan dalam mempelajari bahasa dan keupayaan dalam menggunakan bahasa untuk mencapai matlamat tertentu. Murid yang memiliki kecerdasan ini lebih menonjol dalam melontarkan idea dan pandangan. Mereka juga memiliki kelebihan untuk berhujah dan menggemari subjek-subjek bahasa seperti bahasa melayu, bahasa inggeris dan sebagainya. Mereka menggunakan bahasa dari aspek menulis mahupun berhujah untuk memahami sesuatu konsep. Disebabkan matematik merupakan subjek teras dan murid tidak mempunyai pilihan, maka proses pembelajaran seharusnya disesuaikan dengan kelebihan yang dimiliki oleh murid tersebut. Contohnya murid belajar matematik melalui penulisan fiksyen seperti cerita grafik, membina masalah (problem posing) mewujudkan silang kata, masalah berayat, puisi matematik dan sebagainya. Kecerdasan logik-matematik pula terdiri daripada keupayaan untuk menganalisis masalah secara logik, berupaya menjalankan operasi matematik, dan mengkaji sesuatu isu secara saintifik. Murid yang memiliki kecerdasan ini berupaya untuk mengesan pola, berhujah secara deduktif dan berfikir secara logik. Kebiasaannya murid yang memiliki kecerdasan ini tidak mempunyai masalah dalam kelas matematik. Aktiviti pengukuhan perlu diberikan seperti menyelesaikan teka-teki logik matematik, sudoku, segi empat sama ajaib, peta minda, blok pemikiran dan sebagainya. Kecerdasan spatial/ visual-ruang merujuk kepada kebolehan seseorang untuk memanipulasi dan mewujudkan imej mental dalam menyelesaikan masalah. Mereka juga mampu melihat dunia visual dengan tepat, melaksanakan perubahan dan pengubahsuaian pada pandangan mereka, dan mampu untuk mencipta jika tiada apa-apa rangsangan fizikal. Murid yang memiliki kecerdasan ini menggemari lukisan, peta minda dan lakaran dalam memahami sesuatu konsep. Murid yang memiliki kecerdasan dominan ini dapat membaca gambar rajah dan peta dengan mudah, mahir dalam menggunakan perisian grafik komputer seperti SketchUp Make, Mathlab dan sebagainya. Kecerdasan kinestetik-jasmani melibatkan potensi penggunaan seluruh badan atau bahagian tubuh seseorang untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Murid dalam kategori ini sukakan pembelajaran berbentuk hands-on seperti bertukang, berlakon, menggunakan komputer dan bersukan. Aktiviti pembelajaran matematik seperti eksperimen matematik, memanipulasi bahan manipulatif dalam kelas matematik, aktiviti menggunakan perisian komputer merupakan antara aktiviti yang dapat menarik minat murid dalam kelompok ini. Manakala murid yang memiliki kecerdasan interpersonal berkemampuan untuk memahami tujuan, motivasi dan kehendak orang lain. Murid dalam kategori ini membolehkan mereka bekerja dengan berkesan dengan orang lain. Murid dapat bekerja dalam kumpulan, memberi kerjasama bersama ahli kumpulan lain, mampu memberi pandangan dan mendengar pendapat serta mempunyai kemahiran komunikasi yang baik. Saranan KPM kepada guru untuk melaksanakan strategi pembelajaran koperatif dan kolaboratif memberi kesan positif kepada murid yang cenderung dalam kecerdasan ini. Natijahnya, setiap murid memiliki keunikan dan keistimewaan tersendiri. Adalah penting bagi seseorang guru untuk memahami perkara tersebut dan berkeupayaan untuk mempelbagaikan pendekatan yang berbeza untuk menarik minat murid dalam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran. Pendekatan pengajaran secara holistik menerusi Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia (PPPM) 2013-2025 ini selari dengan salah satu aspirasi Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) bagi memacu negara pada masa hadapan.

New Academia Learning Innovation (NALI)

To foster soft skills among students and to nurture creativity among lecturers in diversifying teaching and learning strategies in classrooms, Academia New Learning Innovation (NALI) was introduced in UTM. It is a framework comprising student-centred and blended learning philosophy, multiple learning modes and materials towards achieving entrepreneurial academia. The concept of blended learning is emphasized in this model. Blended learning is a combination of active and systematic strategy with the use of digital teaching materials in class. This encourages better and more meaningful learning experience. NALI is in line with the National Higher Education Strategic Plan (PSPTN). The plan has now reached Phase 2 (2011-2015 – Enhancement and Empowerment). At this phase, focus is given on improving the quality of teaching and learning with the implementation of student-centered teaching methods.

According to the model as shown in Figure 2 there are 2 modes namely Learning Mode (Pedagogy/Andragogy) and Learning Materials (Digital Resources). The following tables shows the innovations included in both modes.

Majlis Menandatangani LoC antara Fakulti Pendidikan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FPUTM) dan Phu Yen University (PYU) Vietnam

Fakulti Pendidikan Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (FPUTM) dan Phu Yen University (PYU) Vietnam telah menandatangani Suratcara (LoC) dalam satu majlis yang diadakan di PYU pada 10 April 2017 yang lalu. Fakulti Pendidikan diwakili oleh Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah (Pengurus Penyelidikan FPUTM), Dr. Mahani Mokhtar (Ketua Jabatan Asas Pendidikan dan Sains Sosial FPUTM), Dr. Zainudin Hassan (Pensyarah Kanan FPUTM) serta dua orang pelajar PhD Fakulti Pendidikan. Phu Yen University merupakan salah sebuah universiti awam di Vietnam dan telah ditubuhkan berikutan keputusan N0112/QD-TTG dikeluarkan oleh Perdana Menteri pada 24 Januari 2007 atas dasar menggabungkan Teacher Training College di wilayah Phu Yen dan Economics and Technology College. LoC yang ditandatangani ini bakal menjadi platform antara kedua-dua buah institusi dalam untuk berkerjasama dalam bidang pertukaran pelajar dan staf, penyelidikan dan penerbitan, pengendalian seminar dan penyeliaan bersama dengan UTM. Phu Yen juga berminat untuk menghantar kakitangan melanjutkan pengajian di UTM, kerjasama penyelidikan dan program pertukaran pelajar. Ketika ini, seorang kakitangan akademik universiti tersebut sedang melanjutkan pengajian PhD di Fakulti Pendidikan. Selain dari itu juga jaringan kerjasama dapat mengembangkan aktiviti penyelidikan bersama, pendidikan dan penerbitan, khidmat kepada masyarakat dan sebagainya. Bersempena dengan majlis menandatangani LoC itu juga, satu persidangan antarabangsa turut diadakan di mana Dr. Mahani Mokhtar dijemput sebagai Pembentang Jemputan untuk membentangkan kertas kerja bertajuk “International Service Learning Programme UTM-UTM: A Contemporary Prospect towards High Impact New Academia Learning Innovation”.

Sharing of Knowledge and Expertise in Two Cities in Indonesia

Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah, a senior lecturer of Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was invited as a keynote speaker at two international conferences in two cities in Indonesia. The first conference was the 5th South East Asia Development Research International Conference (5th SEA-DR) which was held in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, Indonesia from 3 to 4 May 2017. Besides Dr. Abdul Halim who is also a Research Manager of Education Faculty UTM, other speakers were Prof. Dr. Kees Hoogland from Mathematics Curriculum Research and Development SLO Netherland, Dr. Wanty Widjaja from Deakin University Australia, Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Fauzan from Universitas Negeri Padang and Prof. Dr. Sutarto Hadi from Lambung Mangkurat University. The conference was organized by Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Faculty of Education Lambung Mangkurat University with the theme “Developing Competitiveness through Innovation and Creativity Teaching and Learning”. Dr. Abdul Halim delivered his keynote on innovative teaching and learning practices in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) generally and Faculty of Education UTM specifically in developing graduate competitiveness and creativity. The second conference attended by Dr Abdul Halim was the International Seminar on Mathematics Education 2017 (Intersection’17) which was held in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia on 6th May 2017. This event managed to attract 1000 participants. Aside from local students, the attendees were foreign students from various countries, such as Thailand, Poland, Madagascar and Papua New Guinea. The conference was organised by Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Makassar (UNISMUH). Other keynote speakers were Prof. Dr. Kees Hoogland (Mathematics Curriculum Research and Development SLO Netherland), Assoc. Dr. Wanty Widjaja (Senior Lecturer in School Of Education, Deakin University Australia), Prof. Dr. Irwan Akib (Professor in UNISMUH Makassar) Dr. Wahyudi (Director, SEAMEO Regional Center QITEP in Mathematics, Indonesia), and Dr. Thanya Kadroon (Senior lecturer in Faculty of Education Suratthani Rajabhat University, Thailand). The aim of the conference was to create a platform towards sharing current practices related to mathematics literacy as a solution for those who have difficulties to understand mathematics. With the theme of Shaping Creative Generation through a Culture of Mathematics Literacy, Dr. Abdul Halim Abdullah delivered his keynote on 21st Century Mathematics Teaching and Learning Approaches to Enhance Students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). It is hoped that Dr. Abdul Halim’s participation in this conference can further strengthen cooperation between UTM and UNISMUH.

Selamat bersara , emak!

Hari ini merupakan hari terakhir emak bertugas sebagai seorang guru Tabika KEMAS setelah 32 tahun berkhidmat. Beliau mengambil keputusan untuk bersara awal. Bagi peluang kepada anak-anak muda pula, katanya. Sebagai anak, saya sentiasa menyokong keputusan emak kerana itulah yang terbaik buatnya. Generasi bersilih ganti. Kalau dahulu mengajar anak-anak peneroka, barangkali sekarang sudah mengajar cicit peneroka. Tanpa jemu, emak mengajar mengenal huruf, mengeja sukukata dan akhirnya membaca dengan lancar. Tanpa bosan, emak mengajar mengenal angka, menambah, menolak, dan akhirnya sudah pandai mencongak. Tanpa putus asa, emak mengajar cara memegang pensel, membetulkan gaya kekok kanak-kanak memegang pensel dan akhirnya, pensel sentiasa melekat di jari, tanpa mahu dilepaskan. Dengan penuh semangat, emak mengajar kanak-kanak menghayati lirik nasyid dan beberapa kali membawa pasukan nasyid tadika ke peringkat negeri. Dengan penuh sifat penyayang, memujuk kanak-kanak meraung, menangis di awal persekolahan, mencebok kanak-kanak yang tidak sempat ke tandas, mengelap hingusan, dan membelai dengan penuh kasih sayang.Barangkali ada antara mereka yang telah berjaya sebagai seorang jurutera, cikgu, pegawai kerajaan, pegawai bank dan Alhamdulillah saya sendiri berada pada kedudukan ini hasil didikan emak. Buat emak tersayang, selamat bersara. Satu episod besar yang telah dilaksanakan dalam sebahagian besar cerita kehidupan emak barangkali sudah berakhir, tetapi permulaan episod baru akan bermula. Semoga emak dapat melalui episod-episod tersebut dengan penuh keceriaan di samping ayah, anak-anak dan cucu-cucu tersayang.
