Since I was young, I always wanted to venture into medicine career. I was also good in Science, Mathematics and Additional Mathematic subjects. However, when I filled in university entry form, I chose Civil Engineering as my first option, and I continue working in this field until now.

After graduating, I joined academic engineering job. Academician do many responsibilities not only in teaching & learning roles, but also actively involved in research, consultation projects, commercialization, supervision and administration. I actively involved in consultation projects with industrial collaborators which has male domination.

I have immense satisfaction in this field. I have passion in teaching & learning. I do learn new things from research projects and consultations.  And I translate these experiences into T&L activities during my lecture.

As an academician in engineering, I have to synergies my roles in family and professional matters. Women most often are the ones who adjust their schedules and make compromises when the needs of children and other family members collide with work. The key to succeed in engineering remains educating ourselves about the profession’s value — how we can achieve balance in career and earn a fulfilling joyous living. The challenge of juggling careers and family life continues to be an issue for anyone, not only in engineering field.

I encourage all girls to pursue engineering related field. It is my opinion that girls/women can do better in engineering due to certain characteristics such as passionate, attentive and meticulous.

Yours truly,

Ir. Dr. Sitti Asmah Hassan 😀
