Cats soothes me

Owning cats has been one of the best feelings I have. Looking at them definitely lowers my stress level  and has that calming effect. I have 5 cats at home now. 2 (Miley and Mak Tam) went missing early this year. Of course it was difficult for us when we lost the cats. Of late I had been too busy that I didnt have the time to bathe my 5 cats. Even my daughter didnt have much time to give her adik2 bulu the bath they need. these days Adam likes to sleep with us. Whenever we get up we feel his fur somewhere on the bed. Hmmm Adam Adam….

How to get rid of a flea infestation

This article is directly taken from Elm Vet Group.

A very informative piece of information.

FACT = there are 4 stages in the flea lifecycle, eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas.

Only adult fleas live on the pet – the rest live in your home and garden environment.

Correctly apply a pipette of FRONTLINE Combo* to all cats and dogs in your care. Make sure it is the correct dose size for each animal’s weight. The product will kill adult fleas on the pet within 24 hours. It will kill any more that jump on and also sterilise the female fleas so any eggs she lays will not hatch.

FACT = female fleas can lay up to 50 eggs a day.

Vacuum the home thoroughly, ensuring you move and vacuum under all furniture and in all the nooks and crannies. Do this even if you have wooden or laminate flooring. This will mechanically remove some of the eggs, larvae and pupae in the home environment.

FACT = flea larvae move away from light.
FACT = flea larvae can live between cracks in floorboards.

Wash pets bedding at 60C to remove some of the immature stages.

Thoroughly spray all floor space in the home with a household spray – this may require more than one can (you need to apply it everywhere the pet goes – remember the car) This will kill the eggs and larvae in the home that come into contact with the spray. Remember to move furniture and spray underneath.

FACT = insecticidal home sprays do not kill the pupai stage.

Encourage the pupai stage of the life cycle to hatch out into new adult fleas, so they will jump onto your treated pet and die. This can be done by giving them warmth, vibration, CO2 and humidity. To provide these stimuli:
Turn up the heating in the home.
Place wet towels on warm radiators/bowls of hot water on the floor/and boil the kettle in the rooms of your home.
Vacuuming will generate warmth and vibration and encourage pupae to hatch.

When new adult fleas emerge from the pupae they will jump onto the pet which has been treated with FRONTLINE Combo and be killed within 24 hours. These fleas will be seen on the pet before they die.

FACT = Eradicating the pupae from the home can take several months. Therefore it is normal to continue to see live fleas on pets for this period.

Thoroughly vacuum the home again 2 days after application of the household spray including all the places you do not normally get to (under the sofa, between sofa cushions etc).

FACT = Regular vacuuming will help speed up removal of eggs, larvae and pupae from the environment.

Ensure your pets have their usual run of the house. As the adult fleas emerge from the pupae they want to jump onto your pet to feed. If the pets are not around the fleas will jump on to and bite you instead.

It may take several months to remove all the life stages from your home. Until the environment is free of healthy eggs, larvae and pupae you will still see fleas on your pet as they emerge from pupae.

It is essential that you keep up treatment with FRONTLINE Combo all year. For treatment of a current flea infestation use FRONTLINE Combo on all the cats and dogs every 4 weeks.

Don’t forget…
It can take months to rid your home of fleas – a single treatment will not be sufficient.
FRONTLINE Combo affects the flea nervous system, causing hyperexcitation before they are killed. This can make them even more visible in your pet’s coat.
Treat all the areas your pets frequent such as the car, outdoor buildings, dog kennels etc.
For effective flea prevention (once the initial infestation is eliminated), you should continue treatment all year round with FRONTLINE Combo; dogs every 8 weeks and cats every 6 weeks.
Fleas can live and breed all year in your home.
Prevention is always better than cure.
Any breaks in treatment will mean your pets are at risk of picking up fleas again.
Once on your pet they will start rapidly breeding and laying eggs (50 per day) which will infest your home.

If you fail to keep up with regular treatments your home and pet are at risk of re-infestation!!!

FRONTLINE Combo can be prescribed by any of our veterinary team, please make an appointment now to ensure that: a) your pet b) your family and c) your house – get the very best protection against a flea infestation.

Fleas Infested

Last sunday, Ain was playing with Maru@Manja, when she discovered something unusual about Maru. She gave him a bath and showed me Maru when he was wet. We were shocked to discover Maru covered in fleas. After removing the fleas from Maru’s body, we gave Ben a bath as well. Like Maru, Ben was also infested with fleas. Now I understand why I was itching like mad woman. The fleas have jumped on me for blood! You bloody fleas. Wait till I get my hands on YOU!

I gave all 3 kitties another flea bath on Monday and Tuesday morning, and the fleas were still up and about. Urghhhh I started to google and was speechless to find 1001 new things about fleas infestation in my home.

I also sprayed them with Troy Spray but this did not seem to work. Come Wednesday, I made lemon spray for my household. I boiled 2 cups of water, add a lemon which I sliced and add about a third cup of dried rosemary.  I left the solution to cool and sprayed on my carpet and sofa. I wanted to buy the flea bomb but it’s not sold in Malaysia. Still, there was no signs of the fleas dead. Off to Dr Juliana, my vet for some advice. She reckoned that I took all 3 cats to her clinic but I thought I will flea busting my own way.

On Friday night, I gave all 3 kitties Frontline combo which I bought from Petmaster, Taman Universiti (at RM20 each pippet) which is supposed to kill the ticks, fleas, larvae, and eggs and keep them in their cage.

Key Benefits:
Elimination of fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.) and insecticidal efficacy against new infestations with adult fleas persists for 4 weeks.
Prevention of the multiplication of fleas by inhibiting the development of eggs (ovicidal activity), larvae and pupae (larvicidal activity) originating from eggs laid by adult fleas for 6 weeks after application.
Elimination of ticks (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor variabilis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus). The product has a persistent acaricidal efficacy for up to 2 weeks against ticks (based on experimental data).
Elimination of biting lice (Felicola subrostratus).
Nasri helped me to jump up and down in our living area so that their eggs in my living room would hatch and it would be easier to kill them on Saturday. Besides these, I made another lemon solution before I went to sleep. This time, I used 2 lemon with 4 cups of boiling water.

Come Saturday morning, I cleaned the kitties’ cage. Locked them in the toilet this time to ensure they were confined in one area. I used boiling water to kill all the germs, bacteria and sprayed the cage with lemon solution. Then I sprayed the area with Dr. Clauder’s spray which I bought from my vet.

Ingredients: jojoba oil, mink oil, coconut oil, vegetable oil derivatives, essential oils
Nourishing oils keep the skin and coat soft and increase the body’s defenses against negativity. Spraying this will lead to pests and their eggs be affected. So the skin is clean and free from contamination by pests.

Beneficial effects on pest infestation. Aromatic oils will change animal smell. Sun vermin is also kept away preventively. All of ingredients are all natural and non-toxic.

By dehydration and eggs and larvae can be prevented.

I seriously have no clue why my vet recommended I spray this on my environment. I thought this should be sprayed on my kitties. But, my vet knows best, so I headed her advice. Let’s see if it works.
I vacuumed my home, cleaned up the vacuum bag and sprayed lemon solution on my sofa, carpet, curtains whatever I could think of. Again, I sprayed my home with Dr. Clauder’s spray. Fingers crossed, hoping that my effort would work. At this time, my 3 kitties are still not allowed to leave their territory, and I am still scratching like mad woman.

Kitties at Play

Miley and Mocha are such playful kitties that we loved watching them at play.  My nephew’s Choki RIP last 2 days that actually alarmed me to have both my furkids vaccine.

According to Dr. Barchas from Catster.Com all cats – indoor and outdoor – should have the following vaccines every three to four weeks, beginning at six to eight weeks of age, and ending at 16 weeks: feline viral rhinotracheitis, calci and panleukopenia or FVRCP for short. These should be boostered when the cat is a year old and repeated every three years thereafter.

When I had Miley, I was told that she already had her first vaccine so it was time for her 2nd shot after she was spayed 3 weeks back. Mocha had his first this morning.

Miley was rather moody when she got home from the Vet. She hardly ate any kibbles or wet food. I gave her 2cc of multivitamin and let her rest. All she wanted to do was to sleep. Unlike Miley, Mocha was always hungry, but went of to sleep after his meal.

I hope they are both up on their feet again…I’m missing their usual antics.

ANF Kitten Food

Just bought a new 7.5kg pack of ANF kitten food for Miley & Mocha. A 7.5 kg costs RM130 at Petmaster Taman Universiti….roughly around RM19 per kg.
I tried feeding them with Blackwood kitten food earlier, but they did not quite like it. On one hand, they are a big fan of Royal Canin Exigent for picky eaters. This was recommended to me by my vet. But PRICE is a BIG concern. a 400gram pack costs RM19 and a 2kg pack costs RM70 at Family Vet at BBU.
While I was looking for a premium cat food, David the owner of Petmaster recommended ANF.

100% complete & balanced nutrition, free of added ethoxyquin, artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, by-products, soy, or fillers. Balanced in all essential amino acids and rich in omega fatty acids as well as brewers rice and other high quality nutrients. Well, I guess there’s no harm trying…..But then again, my furkids are such picky eaters that I have to mix these kibbles with either steamed fish or canned fish.

a Tale of two Felines

Last night we took both Miley and Mocha to Family Vet at Bandar Baru Uda. I was alarmed when I found out that Miley was on heat when she went missing last 2 days. So I decided to send her for a spay surgery.  One reason to spay Miley is to prevent her from coming into heat, and cats may have several short heat cycles in a year.

After an appointment, Miley was admitted for a day boarding and spaying. I paid RM100 for the surgery. During the surgery, the cat is given general anesthesia so that it cannot feel any pain or discomfort. The ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus – are removed.

Doctor’s Notes~ All cats should be kept under control to avoid vigorous activity for 7 to 10 days following a spay procedure.  Be sure to check the incision daily for any signs of infection, drainage or increasing swelling.

While Miley had her surgery, I wanted Mocha to be vaccined. But Mocha had the flu. Instead of getting the vaccine shot, he was on antibiotics and flu medication. I also did a blood test on Mocha checking if he had jaundice. Remember, Dr Batu another vet told me that he could be having jaundice? Dr Ju took a sample of Mocha’s blood and ran some tests.

Alhamdulilah, the blood count reading was below 0 point something level. (I’m not a big help here!) So he had no jaundice. Jaundice is often associated with liver non functioning which is abnormal for cat diseases. The blood test was RM25. So overall, I spent RM150 for my darling furkids. And the girls at the vet asked me if I am UP to adopt another one.

From Junk to Premium

The last time we had pets was in 2007 before we moved to NZ. We used to feed our kitties with IAMS. When Anas came to us, we gave him Whiskas & Smart Heart. Only recently that I learned these are commercial cat food with lower nutritional level. Readings in the net showed that commercial cat food contain meat by products. These are the parts of the animal left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone. “Chicken by-products include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other part of the carcass not fit for human consumption,” writes Henry Pasternak in Healing Animals with Nature’s Cures.

.
So from Smart Heart, I changed the kitties’ diet to Science Diet. This was recommended by the Vet.
And my research about cat food continues to discover that Blackwood is a premium choice of food. I wanted to try Royal Canin but from the readings I found in the net, there were too many issues about the food containing lard. There’s no harm feeding a pet with non halal products, but then it is me the human who will have to handle the feeding and I wouldn’t want to cleanse myself after every feeding time…As of today, I bought a packet of Blackwood for Miley and Mocha. Errkkk looks like they haven’t touched their dinner yet. Will see what happens tomorrow…….

Self Healing with Petgrass

Pet grass

When your cats are all sick, it’s best that we let them go through a self-healing process. This can be done by letting them eat a certain kind of grass. I have redone my house and have no grass left around my area. So I decided to grow some grass for my kitties. Thank you Dear Cats for posting this pet grass last week. I was told that the grass is ready to be eaten on day 7. Let’s have a peek at what I’ve done.

The self growing kit

Soil, seeds, a tissue paper all ready for you

Spreading soil in the container

Spread the seeds all over

Sprinkle with some water and cover with more soil

Cover the soil with a tissue paper. Wet the tissue.

Almost there

….and growing
Day 5

Day 6

My new furkid, Miley

Presenting Miley, the newest member in our family. I found her yesterday at Taman Universiti vet while I was looking for ear drops for Mocha. I saw an ad that reads Kittens For Adoption and asked to look for some kitties they have. I love Miley at one look. She looks so much like Mocha but Ain did not quite favour her. Today, (12th Oct 2012) we came back to the vet to pick her and keep her as our family. We’ll have to be ready to have her spayed soon…..

Our Mocha

I am one happy woman. After a week of tending to Mocha, I guess he’s recovering now. He was so weak he hardly ate anything. But he’s been feeding on steamed or fried fish these 2 days.  He refused the kibbles he used to feed on, nor the canned food that we have bought. I fed him with Vitamin B Complex, Liver Medication, Antibiotic, Nutri Rich Vitamins, Glucose Drink, Plenty of water. I noticed that he started having the flu, and rushed to get some flu medication, but Petmaster has run out of flu medication. A friend, Khatijah gave me homeopathic treatment for flu, Arsenic Album. One drop of Arsenic with 100ml of water.

His earmites treatmment, the Sulcolon and BroncSyr, the treatment for cough and flu relief are on the way (I ordered from  DearCats) I’m also waiting for petgrass to reach me. Hmmm a little patience does no harm.

Mocha the manja kitty

Mocha, please recover….

Look at how sick Mocha is….

We lost his antics…

Mocha has been sick, diagnosed with liver problem, jaundice and mouth ulser. He is still on medication, of antibiotics, liquid for his liver and vitamin B complex. Because of the pain in his mouth, we have to feed him with AD which I pureed and force feed him using a syringe. It is difficult for me, I have to rush to work and return home in between to feed him. He’s not his usual self. He prefers to be left alone and would sit in this position for hours.

Bazlie, he came and he’s now gone

Bazlie is now resting in peace. He touched me though he was with me for only 3 weeks.

The night before Bazlie passed away

My Love for Anas

We found a little limping kitten stuck under our shoe cabinet on the 21st July. Nasri named it ‘kitun’. I felt rather funny calling him ‘kitun’ so after so much thought wondering, we decided to name him ‘Anas’, ~taking after the panasonic box we put it in. I was thrilled when hb changed his mind & allowed us to keep it. Elated, I rushed to the store, got a litter box, and food for him. Everyone was excited! We did not choose Anas, but God sent him to us. He was limping yes, but he was such a playful darling.  On the 6th Sept 2012, he went missing. When hb left for work, Anas was still playing at the car porch, but when I left for work, I sensed that he was gone. Anas is God’s gift to us. We didn’t choose to care for him but he chose us. It was therapeutic caring for him. I’m calling for Anas to return to us one day…..
