Synopsis

In Malaysia, rail projects have increasingly come under the spotlight due to the billions of ringgit that are involved as the country embarks on a rail expansion drive, that includes the extension and expansion of Kuala Lumpur LRT system, Klang Valley MRT1, MRT2 and MRT3, the KTMB North-South rail electrification double tracking project (EDTP), coast to coast railway and a high-speed rail (HSR) line from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. A comprehensive human resource and development program is imperative to execute and ensure such sustainability. The Malaysian government Future Rail 2030 Roadmap initiatives have clearly marked the importance for the academia and rail industry players to synergise their activities in achieving the undeniable global and national railway expansion needs.

This presentation will include an overview of the global rail industry which is already highly complex and sophisticated. Rail Industry issues that will be discussed include the principles of customer-driven forces, putting rail transportation in reach of people, providing an end to end journey, reducing the environmental impact, carbon smart operations, energy efficiency, and supporting the economy and optimising the railway through Internet of Things (IoT).

This talk will also discuss the past, present and future of railway transport in Malaysia and neighboring countries. Railway systems engineering is a multi-faceted engineering discipline dealing with the design, construction and operation of all types of railway systems. It encompasses a wide range of engineering disciplines, including civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, industrial and production engineering. Hence it is imperative for IEM and Malaysian Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) to play important roles in the nurturing of local talents to become international technical and managerial experts in all railway related matters in the foreseeable future.
